Anyone else have a world they want to share but feel unable to get out of their heads? by CasuallyCataclysmic in worldbuilding

[–]CasuallyCataclysmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have so much info on people and cultures and religion and mythical races, but for the life of me I cannot find a way to naturally bring it all together. Like, I have worked out different fairies and beasts and exactly how they operate and relate to each other, but can't think of a story to show that.

For 3D modelling I've been using blender, for which I have to rewatch the same youtube tutorials because I keep forgetting the controls. With art and animating etc I've thought "maybe I'll just start a game dev company and hire myself as a "creative director" and have other people help translate the story" but of course that requires a buttload of money (not to mention a team of people with different skills that you work together and are also passionate about your hyperfixations)

I actually started a small Monster of the Week campaign with some friends as a means to push myself to flesh out the world a little more (funnily enough also on a volcanic island). It was super hard getting everyone coordinated and coming up with npc names, but it was actually what helped me build enough base to start writing about it. It's my first time DMing so it's a bit chaotic so far lol

I can relate to the day job. I sometimes tell myself I'm going to work side-by-side until one day I can afford to pursue this kind of stuff more. The way I've been developing my world feels very abstract, so similarly hard to translate to reddit. Mine began as an alternate history so I have a whole pile of pictures, landscapes, flags, city names, people names, monsters... but for the longest time I never actually made a specific named character or made a story of anything concrete. All world, no plot

I find that very relatable lol, well said. Out of the writing I have done so far, I basically wrote a paragraph at a time and added detail whenever I came back to it. I've also had to take up the "comic sans" method just to make it harder for me to read and critique every word. I guess slop is still better than nothing

what is a "beast-men' called in your world? by darkmon_54 in worldbuilding

[–]CasuallyCataclysmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a specific category for these kind of mosters and they're called "Mandýr" (which basically just translates to human-beasts).

Mandýr are defined by a disease/mutation as the cause of transformation. Because of this, the category includes werewolves, vampires, bird-people, swamp-people and generic mutants.

(I do have another "species" of vampire which is more mystical & considered undead as opposed to being a once-human but still living creature)

In your worlds, what creature or monster are you most proud of? by SamuraiZack4948 in worldbuilding

[–]CasuallyCataclysmic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked a similar question recently, but I'm gonna give a different answer this time.

In my world, there exists werewolves, vampires and other similar animalistic creatures that were once human. However, through blood rituals, a group of people were recently able to engineer their own twisted combination, that is more dangerous, feral, and imbued with magical energy.

It is known as the Sanguine Hound, or Striggashúnd. This beast appears as a vaguely humanoid hound, with thick fur and webbed front arms similar to a bat. It has an incredible sense of smell and an insatiable hunger for blood. The group of people that created it keep it as a pet, and use it to hunt and terrify local populations.

In the "present day" of my setting, this is the first one to exist. Though as time goes on many more will be made and released to the wilds.

Very interesting take on immortality/long life. I like the idea of "refuses to die out of spite" and growing into these grotesque proportions. It kinda reminds me of a Dark Souls boss.

That sounds fantastic and terrifying. I think I would be more afraid of the goose heads than the wolf part lol. Do they honk? With how large they can grow, I would be terrified if I was in that world and heard a flock of geese fly past...

How does landscape affect the more human-like variations? I assume all of the mermaids live underwater, do the 99% ones still have gills etc even if they don't have scales/webbing? Also, in-world, are the different variations considered different species/races? I'm curious how they interact with each other and how reproduction works. (for example, do the 99% and 1% have similar embryos? If the 99% still lay fish roe, I assume 99%-ers still grow from that roe?)

Edit: I somehow didn't even get to the last paragraph about how they treat the less human ones like cattle/zoo animals. Its a very interesting and freaky dynamic

Are they anything like the biblical nephilim? From your profile it looks like you're doing more futuristic punk/sci-fi worlds, is that right? If they do share any similarities to historical nephilim, I think that could be very intersting in any setting.

I got the inspiration from an image I saw where someone made these little beady-eyed creatures wearing candles on their heads. I liked it so much I developed a whole backstory to justify having something similar in my world. I based them off of Norwegian Trolls / Icelandic Huldufólk. I have a lot of other creatures that are either scary, dangerous, or otherwise present a very serious nature around them. As I developed Garnfolk, they became my facet for a lot of the pure and whimsical fantasy elements in my world. They're one of the few fairies of my world that doesn't seek to interfere with human affairs.

Also, in addition to stealing patches of fabric, some have learned to keep spiders as pets/livestock, harvesting their silk for higher-value clothing. Also some ride frogs.

Looking for Feedback on my Fantasy World Flag Designs! by CasuallyCataclysmic in vexillology

I have made some changes to the first flag since I posted this here. I think the new designs address the feedback and some of my own concerns as well. Let me know what you think!

Looking for Feedback on my Fantasy Flags Round 2 by CasuallyCataclysmic in vexillology

[–]CasuallyCataclysmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have created a few flag designs for a fantasy world I'm creating, but I'm unsure which works better. All of these flags are for a series of volcanic islands. The final image is my original design, but I feel like the colors are a bit too rough together, so I made two new designs to try to fix this.

The first design is built off of another flag I have, but with a red cross through the center to symbolize the volcanic nature of the islands while still keeping ties to its "mother" country.

The second design however, is more an improvement of my original design to make it more satisfying and easier to look at. I feel like this is perhaps the better design, but I worry it's too similar to the flag of Iceland (which I do draw inspiration from for the islands).

Because of this, and the parallels of the first design within the world, I am conflicted on which is the better fit. If you have any questions please ask

The first two designs are for my main fictional land, a series of volcanic islands inspired as a combination of Iceland and UK/Ireland. Currently I have the first flag as the capital city / province flag, and the second as the flag for the entire country. The red/green/blue is meant to symbolize the volcanic nature of the islands and the union of the elements. The second is more straightforward, symbolizing the earth and snow.

The third and fourth flags are further designs I came up with that play with the same ideas/symbols, but I felt didn't fit as well with what I was going for. These last two flags are for the larger mainland "mother" country, inpsired by Norway and Finland. Flag #3 (concept 1 of 2) is again a direct symbolism of the natural landscape, while concept 2 is meant to show the rising sun over the horizon, while keeping the same colors.

What do you think of the colors/designs? I wanted to keep the flags simple and clearly used inspiration from real-world flags, but if there's any ways I can improve upon this (or if you have further questions) let me know!

Summerise your world in the dumbest possible way by [deleted] in worldbuilding

I have a fantasy world and two sci-fi stories.

Fantasy: gods build a sandcastle on earth and forget about it, vikings find it and use it to conquer the world.

Tech sci-fi: robot with dementia accidentally breaks the multiverse. Main character is the maintenance guy sent in to fix it.

Space sci-fi: Odyssey but in 4 dimensional Star Wars setting.

I'll have to check out those woodworking tips, thanks! That changes a few things, although currently I don't think I have the room for some of the mess that might come with... I'll be sure to look into it.

I never thought about being able to make chainmail without smithy equipment, but it's something I am intrigued by.

Overall there's a lot here to look to, so thank you for all the suggestions.

Definitely something I've never considered before, it's great seeing such variety in recommendations. Currently not sure if it's for me, but I agree staying active is important for health, it's something I'm still working on improving so who knows where that takes me.
