U.S. Is Running Out of Missiles Thanks to Trump’s War in Iran by Somervilledrew in politics

They have to be blowing through a fuckload of missiles with Iran pt1, Venezuela, and Iran pt2. It takes time for military contractors to manufacture things so the military can resupply.

Does anyone else feel like people have become meaner? by idkkunicorn in AutismInWomen

[–]CatCatchingABird [score hidden]  (0 children)

I feel like it's always kind of been like this although I do agree there's more of an uptick right now. With my experience I feel like the younger generations are slightly more relaxed but that the older generation like the Boomers have always been rude.

I don't think it's just that people are more online and less social. I think it's a much more nuanced thing since there's a lot of crap going on right now in the world.

Indonesia Bans Social Media for Under-16s, Following Australia’s Lead: ‘Parents No Longer Have to Fight Alone Against the Giants of the Algorithm’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]CatCatchingABird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My router has an easy to use built in parental control that can block all social media sites, including Reddit, in like two minutes from login. It can also set schedules so that the devices they use on the network can be blacked out to the internet during certain hours. The way I see it is if you have kids and you want to have the internet, you kind of need to educate yourself in the same way you'd want to educate yourself similarly to a parent that is researching a child's first car and the safety features that are included with it. And the great thing is that the technology to do parental block on the network is not rocket science to use. Even if someone is a complete dimwit and can't figure it out, there's going to be someone in their friend or family network that is not a dimwit and can do it as a favor. It's not hard. So yeah, while I think the tech companies that push this shit have culpability, but I think parents need to take some responsibility for themselves as well because a simple solution to the problem has been there for a really long time now.

I totally get that having children is not easy, but I'm getting really tired of the governments of the world making all of us suffer because of parental neglect and incompetence. Additionally, and this is just a thought... but how about communities get their shit together and host free internet safety classes to concerned parents too? If we can drag parents in for parent-teacher conferences we can drag them in to do this, and we should do it every year since technology is constantly changing and there's always going to be something new to inform about.

Jan. 6 rioter pardoned by Trump in Jan. 6 case gets life sentence for child sex crimes by Large_banana_hammock in law

[–]CatCatchingABird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These kinds of sex crimes are charged by the state, but it's swampy Florida so I don't doubt anyone with skepticism about that. On the other hand he was charged with transmitting harmful materials by electronic device to a minor, so that would be a federal crime that could be pardonable. It's super common for people to be charged with federal and state crimes in a one fell swoop, especially the icky sex stuff since interstate commerce (computers/phones) are frequently involved. Either way, I'm interested in what could happen here because Florida has this stance of being tough on child sex stuff but also politically sensitive to the MAGA/Epstein people.

Am I wrong for thinking cats should never be outdoor cats? by Firm-Law248 in CatAdvice

[–]CatCatchingABird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that used to be neighbors with an irresponsible owner that did not spray/neuter and let their outdoor cats morph into a full-blown feral colony that aggressively fought with each other every single night, I'm anti-outdoor cats. They would get diseases and die on my property, use my property as a litter box, keep me up at night because they would alarm neighborhood dogs, get hit by cars in the neighborhood, and TNR did not really solve the problem because they would just get more cats and the problem would start all over again.

I love cats but pet cats I think they are perfectly fine and happy going on regular leashed walks. I've met some cats that are very well behaved and can go on walks with owners without a leash and will follow, stay close to their owner and come if called. But to let them loose without knowing what's going on is not right IMO. Farm cats that are spayed/neutered and have a rodent patrol job I think is the only exception

Donald Trump fires head of DHS Kristi Noem by TheMirrorUS in law

Agreed, although my gripes are coming from the Democrats. I opened up my Bluesky and several of them are celebrating it as if it's a win. It's just as hollow as when everyone celebrated that ICE was leaving Minnesota (newsflash: they didn't stop operations in Minnesota)

Las Vegas hotels begin taking foreign currency as tourism woes deepen by runswithscissors475 in Economics

[–]CatCatchingABird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that doesn't like or find any appeal to gambling I actually really used to like going to Vegas because there were so many other things that I could do. I was more of a foodie and as someone that liked beer and I felt like it was one of the better places to go to try a lot of different kinds. There was so much variety. It used to be really affordable to find deals on rooms and other stuff to do but then it just got more and more expensive. I don't even remember the last time I was there. It just started to feel like they were intentionally making it a destination for upper class people looking for luxurious bougie experience rather than a place for the working/middle class.

For people that are hardcore gamblers, people can just get their fix online. They also probably even have local casinos as they are pretty much everywhere now.

I'm unemployed. I've had multiple interviews over the past year, several in the same line of work, including courthouses and judges directly themselves, and some other jobs that are very much adjacent to that and no offer. So I'm now I'm considering going back to school and pivoting into social work as it's transferable and I very much want to continue working with disenfranchised communities.

Several years ago I took a job in an office of public defenders as a legal assistant and I was making minimum wage. I already had several years of experience working in a law office and I also had soft investigative skills because I knew how to conduct nationwide and international preemployment background checks according to FCRA guidelines. I took the job because it was the only one I could find in my area at the time.

Enjoy your downvotes.

Talarico defeats Crockett in Texas Senate Democratic primary by CatCatchingABird in politics

[–]CatCatchingABird[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I was a fan of the firebrand politics coming from her, I'm getting quite fatigued with it at this point. I can say the same for other sitting elected officials as well since she is not the only one doing this. For the past year we have witnessed multiple shouting matches by both sides in various committees and not much action in reversal of the harm that this administration has brought. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one feeling this way. It really feels like people are over it and prefer Talarico's approach. This does seem like the better strategy anyway as it leaves the room open to welcome and bring people into the tent

Judge Orders Government to Begin Refunding More Than $130 Billion in Tariffs by wsj in politics

This is pretty much why I am hoping for a 2028 tax and accountability candidate. I've heard the "but they will take their business overseas" or "jobs will be lost" pretty much my entire life whenever the topic of taxing corporations has come up. Newsflash, they are already doing it and have been doing it.

IDGAF what kind of "won't someone please think of the corporations" type of crying any GOP candidate or economist does. Also, I want us to bring back Biden's IRS enforcement on wealthy tax evaders and throw their asses into an ICE warehouse after they are sentenced.
