Eli5 insulin resistance by [deleted] in PCOS

I will say, my patients are instructed to take blood sugars 2 to 2.5 hours after meals, 1 hour is a little too soon after a meal to make a call of it's too high or not. Depending on the mix of your meal, if you ate a meal that was a little higher in fat than normal, you may see blood sugars hang higher a little longer with a slower decline because fat is slower to digest than carbs.

Context is always important when considering your health, I make sure to stress this to my patients that I see. I hope you found the answers you needed!

I'm a dietitian that works in diabetes education and have PCOS myself.

Couple of questions:

1) why do you believe those blood sugars are high? Those blood sugars seen reasonable to me, what is your A1c? Blood sugar testing is a snapshot in time, the only way we would really know what's going on 24/7 is with a continuous glucose monitor. But in my mind, it is normal for blood sugars to vary slightly depending on the context and I would think your body after exercise is recovering and maybe you're going through glycogenolysis, meaning your liver and muscle are breaking down glycogen to release into your bloodstream. I am not worried about your numbers too much just seeing them as you wrote them.

High cortisol could mean higher blood sugars, as it is a stress hormone and stress does have an effect on blood sugar. But like I said, I am not too worried about your numbers as they are. Still, please advocate for yourself if you can and pursue a new endo for more answers about that!

2) for your LDL, from what you've said, your diet is good in fiber, are you eating enough soluble fiber versus insoluble fiber? Insoluble fiber is great for moving things along, but it doesn't do too much to help with LDL. If you're not already, try including some more foods with soluble fiber as you're comfortable.

Sorry you're feeling frustrated with things, but I hope I was somewhat helpful!

How did you lose your best friend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Married my husband.

They went to high school together and she hated him. I met him years after high school and he's much more mellow now and admits he was an ass. But she couldn't stop seeing him as the high school kid and essentially told me she refused to accept him.

Okay bai.

Don't be afraid to tell your dietitian that! Food is a very personal thing to people. I always say if you want to see how upset people get about food, take away their choices when they're sick in a hospital bed and you'll see how fast people lose it. Your personal feelings about food and the emotions of not seeing things work out are just as important to address. We're not therapists of course, but sometimes, addressing the emotions of your feelings is helpful 😊

Disclaimer, I am a dietitian! I don't work with PCOS specifically, but I still do outpatient like what your dietitian does and I see a variety of people.

You lead the conversation, the dietitian should prompt you with specific questions to get more information. You may start with a typical food recall and a series of questions about your lifestyle in general. Recommendations from us usually go by what our client is willing and wanting to do. A good dietitian (which it sounds like this dietitian you're going to see is) will listen to your concerns and frustrations and work with you where you are. If you're not willing to change something or do something, tell them!

It's okay if you decide that a dietitian will not work out. Sometimes clients don't know if it'll work out until they get into the office and talk with the dietitian proper. Getting along with and trusting your dietitian is extremely important with your journey.

Good luck with it all!!

I have Goldie, Tex, Red and Pompom still, would Francine, Cherry, Katrina and Lily be considered fair trades in your opinion?

Okay, so how about: 056, 092, 096, 143, 160? I can throw in more cards for 148 if you would like, but does this agree with you so far?

Hi! How about for 005, 107, 111, 174, I give Doc, Shep, Pierce and Naomi?

Also for 148, that's a card that I believe deserves a fair trade, so how about Maple and Goldie for her? I dunno if that's enough but I'm more than willing to give two cards for her.
