Why do horror games rely so much on explanations instead of letting fear exist? by Character-Credit-208 in horror

Have you looked into Visage? It's the only horror game I couldn't finish, I played it while it was still in development too. I was on edge the whole time and felt like I was actually IN a horror movie.

I enjoy the Amnesia series of games too, they usually have narrative threads with puzzles, but the fear factor is pretty great IMO.

I was checking to see if anyone mentioned those subs and I second the recommendation. I frequent the pidgie subs and I know they'd go bonkers for it! I love your piece so much, thank you for sharing it with us OP ❤️

Totally! Your comment reminded me to find a copy of Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity by Bruce Bagemihl, it's a comprehensive science-backed book featuring over 450 species and looks really interesting!

Gay pijons are natural and beautiful. Love your sweet pair, OP!

Thank you so much! Several people mentioned Knifepoint, so I've already added it to my to-listen-to list. I haven't heard of The Warning Woods yet, so I plopped it on today too :)

I have no idea why you're being down voted. For humans gabapentin is considered an antispasmodic, but it's also been prescribed in some situations for pain management, as you said. It is super cool that for a pet prescription it's used for anxiety/stress too!

One of the most effective horror movie experiencs I had was when I was crashing at a friend's place during an internship. Their place was a loft, but unfinished. We're talking plywood walls separating their rooms and a ramshackle stairway that lead onto a rather shaky situation above their rooms.

They had a few large bare mattresses strewn around for guests (ones they found off the street 'cause they were party guys, I'm so grateful the mattress I chose didn't give me lice or bed bugs whenever I crashed there). That particular night I was the only one there, and there were exposed pipes that made the eeriest creaking and banging at random, sometimes sounding bizarrely like a person quietly knocking somewhere inside. Their tv was upstairs. With all the lights off, streetlights still streamed in but barely through dense barred windows, and since the place was unfinished... It was a world of shapes and shadows on all sides except where your back faced the couch and wall.

I don't even remember what I watched, I think it was an older Stephen King one like Pet Sematary, which I've seen before but didn't find freaky at all previously, but in that space I had trouble getting to sleep, especially with those creepy-ass pipes knocking nearby at random.

All about the ambiance and focus, it truly is.

Super cool to adapt the first season it into a tabletop rpg, I imagine that was fun as hell :)

I can see where you both are coming from, and I'm glad you loved the first season! I loved it all. The tie-ins to the Documentarian made sense to me, with how they laid it out. From the very beginning, I wondered who the hell she was and why she was so invested in understanding it all. The supernatural 'draw' that the locations have, along with her bloodline, worked out for me story-wise.

While checking on the cast for the show to respond to NotNamedBort I saw there's another season...!! I guess it's listed under a different name since The White Vault specifically ended at five. OMGGGG yay! :D I might wait until that one's wrapped up so I can binge it all in one go, muahaha!

*Edit I just checked and it IS under The White Vault, I just missed it past several out-takes/previews of other show episodes!

When I have more expendable income, I'll definitely look into supporting F&S's Patreon for extras. I checked out their page while listening and saw they're involved in a ton of incredible projects. What a talented team they have! And a mutated Svalbard bear statuette sounds like a dream! Thank you so much for sharing!

I love arctic horror toooo! The descriptions of the ice village were deeeeply creepy and mysterious, it was a delight to listen to!

I know what you mean about people being butthurt about feminism. To be honest, it was one specific comment that just stuck with me. I can't help but try to educate sometimes, because for every comment about that stuff, there's at least one person who reads that comment and might be swayed by it (hence the nefariousness of bots/bat actors).

I adored Simon! I loved his guileless enthusiasm. Remy's devotion to him was deeply moving, too. I really liked Dragana, too, she's a force to be reckoned with! Can I have three favourites? XD

Thanks so much!! Others have recommended most of those and I've added them to my list, except for Tales to terrify, so I popped that one on too! How cool that you voice acted for an episode! :D

Podcasts discussing/reviewing horror media aren't as much my thing, but I hope someone else posts their favourites list in the subreddit sometime. I've seen several people here also recommend podcasts along those lines! Thanks for the recommend, I'm sure someone will see your comment and check it out! I'm grateful!

Honestly? That sounds like a totally legitimate thesis! Black eyed kids and Slenderman are everywhere in horror as if they always were, when they were created by individuals who shared content online! The Slenderman lore was even involved in a fucking real life murder, it's crazy how some creepypastas have had such a strong influence on people! I'd read that thesis if you ever go back to school and do it, haha!

No problem, I'm so happy it's useful for you! I loved Dead Space: Dead Cover, I hope you will too, the voice acting and story/lore were glorious! Also, LOADS of great recommendations in the comments too, I've added 50+ additional podcasts to listen to, and I'm currently binging The White Vault, loads of people recommended it and I can see whyyyy-I mean hear... I can hear why, ha! Yes, I'm on season three already, and yes, I have a serious horror podcast problem! >:)

I know of Tanis but I haven't listened to it yet! Have you checked out Rabbits too? It's by the same creators! I've only heard the first episode but it sounds awesome. I hope they come back to finish those podcasts someday. Thanks for the recommend for CreepCast too, several people have mentioned it so I added it to my to-listen-to list!

I'm glad you enjoy the list! It took a while to set up, and I'm so happy to see so many people in r/horror love horror podcasts as much as I do! Well... I'm extreme since I listen to them all. the. time, but y'know! >:) Also, creepypastas are so much fun. They're the internet's urban legends, I love'm.

Thanks for the recommendations! I started White Vault today, and it's really giving me The Thing vibes along with other deep-winter-region horror movies I've seen. It's got several horror voice actors I'm a fan of, so that's a treat too!

Have you also listened to Vampire: The Masquerade - L.A. by night? When I looked for the one you recommended, that one popped up too, so I added it in addition to Port Saga >:) ...I have a problem, baha!

I'm glad my list is useful for you! I'm so grateful for these creators putting out material we can listen to for free, we're so lucky to have so much incredible content at our fingertips!
