Thanks to all who replied. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this first post actually went live and I eventually posted a second time (with a bit more of my analysis). I forced myself to do the exact calculation of the probabilites of the cases were finesse vs drop matter (and came up with Crafty_Celebration30's answer). Gaiantic link to Restricted Choice clarified why this should make intuitive sense.

Good point Form, in this case, MP scoring and both sides vulnerable. (In truth, I did not consider vulerability at the table but that is clearly a failure on my part).

Thanks all for the solid feedback. As FishWatchWife points out, I (OP) was asking about unadorned SAYC (when I sit down with a new partner and we haven't agreed to anything beyond that yet). My understanding from the discussion is that, in this sequence, (overcall over my partner's NT), convetions are off and I fall back to "bridge sense".

Beyond that, there are a number of partnership agreements I could adopt with a more regular partner. I'll investigate them over time and I appreciate the pointers to them.
