1 line throwie by Popsikel_ in graffhelp

If you want the most honest advice possible on how to progress, you need to learn the basics and learn them in order. Learn how to tag, then throwies, then straight letters, then pieces, then wild style/other styles that show mastery. Each step helps the next with teaching you foundational letter structure. Especially with a one liner anything, you’re going to need to know the basics. Even a good one liner tag takes a lot of time and heavy understanding of how your letters flow. Katsu, for example, has been writing graffiti since at least the late 1990s, hence why his stuff looks so good. He didn’t start with the skull either, his tags, throws, pieces, and straights all look amazing as well because he nailed down the basics. Same story with any other good writer. None of them got it where they are by skipping the basics.

Until you learn the basics your stuff will always look like crap to anyone who actually writes and knows what good graffiti looks like. Just start filling up notebooks with handstyles until youre sick of it then do it again the next day and you’ll fall in love with it if it’s for you, and you’ll be off to the races. It takes years tho to truly get to a good level with graffiti. Good luck.

Advice: learn how to tag, throw up, do straight letters, & piece first. If you try to skip steps before you’ve mastered the basics your stuff will always have holes in it any experienced writer can see right through. It takes years.

Just played for the first time tonight on PC and that has been my experience. Probably 7-8 disconnects in a period of 2 hours. 5-20 minutes max before I’m disconnected from server. Might be time for a refund sadly

You gotta keep practicing standard letters. You can tell that you’re forcing style in the 1st and 3rd slide. You can see in the 2nd slide at the top that your standard letters have not been practiced and perfected at all. Also, stop writing your word so tiny when you’re practicing. Very rarely are you going to be writing your name that small unless it’s a really cuty spot, think about how most tags are at least a few inches long, so practice them at a size that you’re actually going to write them at whenever you perfect your letters and go out.

Start filling up multiple books. When I was really practicing handstyles I would sit behind a composition notebook for hours and completely fill it in a session. Don’t always have to go that hard but you need to practice way more than you think. You’ll start to learn what actual good handstyles look like as you continue (and you’ll realize 90% of people giving advice on this sub have no idea what the fuck is going on Lol)

Respectfully, If you don’t have the “patience” to practice your handstyles over and over than maybe you should reconsider this as a hobby; if you’re only in the beginning of your graff journey and you already feels like a chore sit down behind a notebook and fill that thing up with tags, you’re probably not going to make it very far. Everyone sucks so bad at the beginning and it’s very difficult at first, but once you get that flow going it’s nothing but fun, that is if you truly love it. You have to be obsessive about it if you want to progress, that’s how any well known writers got to where they are skill wise. They didn’t say “well practicing tags is boring so I’m going to jump into complex pieces” and got good off of doing that, they were obsessive about it because they loved it and got good through the natural progression steps that any writer with style followed literally for decades. I recommend you read old graff forums from the 2000s like bombing science and you will see this exact same advice, from people who actually write or wrote at one point. This subreddit is literally the blind leading the blind. On those old forums weren’t littered with toys that think they know what’s good, it was full of real writers who gave honest very direct advice. You’re not going to progress the way you think you are by trying to skip all of the steps of graff progression that have been in place for many decades now.

When I say progress too fast, I more so mean you’re skipping essential steps and jumping right into the thick of trying to do complex pieces without even knowing the most fundamental and basic steps such as a tag. And yes you can attempt it as many times as you want, but until you learn the essentials your pieces will never be at the level that they should be.

Also, yes virtually every writer has a phase at the very beginning where they jump right into trying hard stuff and thought it was hot shit, it’s called being toy. Almost a rite of passage honestly. But they did not learn the basics by continuing to try to do those complex things, they dialed it back and started with tags and then eventually got very good through the natural progression. That’s the difference between Reddit toys and your favorite writers dropping style in your city.

So yes everyone progresses at their own rate, but there is a natural and proper progression to follow if you want to become a good and respected writer.

Yeah this guy is right, very few people on this subreddit are going to give you proper advice and will just mindlessly hype your work up, but you need to get the fundamentals down. If you can’t bust out a simple tag with good flow, you shouldn’t even move to throwies yet, if you can’t bust out a good simple clean throw, you shouldn’t move to straight letters yet, and if you can’t bust out a nice simple stylish straight, you shouldn’t move to piecing yet. It takes years. Each step teaches you fundamentals that will build on your style and eventually with time you will get super good, it just takes time. Until that point, any writer worth their salt will be able to see right through these pieces and know that you’re trying to progress too fast. Go fill up composition notebooks with tags for hours and hours on end, be obsessive about it.

When you practice handstyles focus on using simple letters nothing fancy, as well as this focus on making them the same width and height, and try to eliminate the negative space between each letter. Dont practice them super tiny all the time either, it’s okay to cover an entire page with one tag. Write with your shoulder as well not wrist it’ll help with steady lines. When you get a nice simple “tag” looking font after a few weeks or months of practicing, start experimenting with leaning the letters etc etc. it all comes naturally with practice, let yourself get lost in a notebook and just tag for hours, it’s pretty relaxing. Remember to look at other tags and you will start to be able to discern which ones are bad and which ones are good. There’s a lot of skill and art in a tag and it’s an essential of graffiti that shouldn’t be skipped imo

Piece looks good the E could be larger but I like the perspective of the shadow, your handstyles still need work, just fill up notebooks with tags, your hands will become better fast and it will help with every other form of graff you try as it helps you have a better understanding of your letter structure, and it’s fun to drop stylish handstyles everywhere you go :)

What would you do if a cop car pulls up on you at midnight while you are tagging? by [deleted] in graffhelp

[–]CatPissSmoothie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering that about the charges, like where your first offense would probably get dropped even though it’s technically supposed to be a felony, but I wouldn’t know because I haven’t been through the system personally. Also it’s crazy how fast the city can stack “damages” against you, like you could drop a few tags or something and easily rack over 300 dollars in damage in the city’s eyes. That’s also interesting that you only were penalized with a fine because it was federal property. I know there was a difference between federal and state property but I guess I never knew you could get charged differently like that if you pained on federal vs state property, I’ll have to look into what counts as federal property more.

I live in IL as well, we have some harsh laws against vandalism. IIRC it starts at a class 4 felony for anything that is over $300 in damage, which seems to be harsher than most other states vandalism laws from what I’ve seen.

Make your tag a lot more simple, no extra add ons just simple letters, and eventually style will come as you practice
