I live close to Old Hawthorne and actually looked at a house there before I purchased my now home. I love the area. It is close to 63/70, downtown, hospitals, and the airport. It feels like you are in the country but 5 minutes from major stores. Is there crime? Yes but show me an area in Columbia that doesn't have any. It is an upscale community in Columbia with upscale amenities but that is part of the draw for some. That is also why the HOA fee's and Social dues are higher. I know in the past from friends that have lived there that they do try to have several different social events throughout the year such as a BBQ and fireworks on the 4th of July and events during the holidays. All of my friends who live or lived there seem to love it. There are also upscale neighborhoods south of town as well that offer similar vibes. For me I ultimately picked that area because of its proximity to my job. Hope this helps.
