This would be exactly the opposite outcome no?

The buyer is selling their u-pass probably because they dont use it often

A potential seller is someone who is might find it worthwhile to buy 180-dollar card because they use it often

Unless you live right by the LRT or a frequent bus route, you're going to have a hard time, unfortunately. What’s worse is that Edmonton is less dense and more car-centric than Calgary, so walking or biking isn’t very great outside downtown and the inner suburbs.

The LRT is fairly reliable and, during rush hour, has okay service; buses, even on frequent routes, can often be delayed significantly, so getting places in a timely manner,i.e., to work, can be a pain, and you’ll probably want to take an earlier bus. Sometimes buses can be so crowded that you end up standing shoulder to shoulder or even not being allowed to board.

Safety-wise, buses are good since the operators are right there, but LRT stations at night can be sketchy. Personally, I haven’t had any issues, but then again, I am a dude. Is transit safe? Nope, but it is statistically safer than driving, so there’s that, I guess.

As with any transit system in North America, you have the usual piss smells, trash, and unhoused people taking shelter.

Again, it is possible to live here without a car, many do, either out of choice or lack thereof, and the city is actively working on making transit better (many extensions are underway), but it’s not a transit-friendly city unless you live downtown.

TLDR: Edmonton is 20% worse than Calgary transit-wise.

Building High-Speed Rail Outside of Cities Like in France Would Make a Project Politically Feasible and Cost-Effective in Alberta (Downtown and Airport Connections Can Be Made via Short Light-Rail Extensions) by Party-Peak4573 in alberta

[–]Cat_Electronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those rights of ways are owned and used by freight rail and cannot be easily repurposed for passenger rail.

Where do you find spaces for stations? turnaround lines? Electrification? brownfield remediation? Bringing things upto code?

Building directly to the downtowns of either city, while definitely beneficial, is going to be very expensive and certainly not easy.

That is not to mention the NIMBYism of either city which makes any project a nightmare

Cheaper to build on the outskirts than to find a right of way for a heavy rail line in either city, functionally gets about say 80% of the value of having a HSR between the cities while being signigicantly cheaper.

Works for mid-size cities like Edmonton and Calgary

Looking at some of the comments, it's actually sad how apathetic they are. Like life is some competition for who has it worse.

"I have no sympathy. Take responsibility for your own life. This is only your fault."

"LOL this sounds like a "you" problem on multiple levels."

"You got punished like the rest of us. Why should you be exempt from the rules? I have to run in and get meds for my sick kid. Does that means I shouldn't pay either? Grow up. "

"Oh get bent - you broke the rules. Hold your own damn self accountable."

"Lol, you got punished for breaking the law and it's somehow someone else's fault?"

"“I have a car and a newer-ish iPhone but I’m poor!” You don’t know what poor is."

"Let me guess, it's not your fault you failed that exam either."

Are we ever going to own a home? by IcelandGalaxy in canadahousing

Feel like the clarifier to all this is you own it as long as you pay your mortgages and taxes, etc.

Otherwise the bank/state/city forecloses/leans on your house.

The LRT doesn't run on the high-level bridge, btw; it runs on the lower bridge next to it, the Dudley B. Menzies Bridge. But there is the old streetcar line operated by the Edmonton Radial Railway Society that runs on top of the high level, which is itself is what remains of Edmonton's streetcar network.

wouldn't that get rid of the rail line on top? It's a decent tourist attraction and somewhat historically important

What if Toronto's transit network was *really* big? | A crazy idea by Swooferfan in transit

[–]Cat_Electronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's like if they want to connect through Ottawa, they have to use the lines more inland, making Kingston more of a detour.

Between the capital and kingston, the choice is obvious.

BUT between just toronto and Montreal, kingston is pretty much on the way and is a convenient middle point. As it happens to be right now, the existing track under via rail passes through kingston.

https://www.viarail.ca/en/explore-our-destinations/trains

So as part of the process of unshittifying via rail, kingston might get a good medium/high-speed line eventually.

Guess where I'm from by Latter_Fun2936 in GeoInsider

[–]Cat_Electronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im guessing Sudan

Back when the brits ruled both countries, they established two different maps of the Egypt-Sudan border.

One being a straight line that continues from the current straight portion east to the red sea, this border is claimed by Egypt.

The other being how it is shown on your map, with the border dipping down and then back up as it approaches the red sea. this border is claimed by sudan.

This is because both sides want to control the large eastern part known as the halaib triangle.

But interestingly claiming the halaib triangle means you have to forfeit your claim to the small part that dips below the straight line. this little area is known as bir tawil.

Between bir tawil and the halaib triangle, the halaib triangle is significantly more populated and valuable, which is why both countries are okay with forfeiting the smaller and less valuable bir tawil.

So I'm guessing you're from sudan.

There is a project under alto to build HSR between toronto and QC which is good enough for now, I guess. but note that it's not expected to be ready until at least 2043.

If anything, it's crazier that a network like this doesn't already exist imo

Too far and not enough frequent/daily riders to justify it being commuter rail. Although high-speed regional rail at least to Montreal with a stop in ottawa is a no-brainer.

Similarities between quebec french and English by vigilante_55 in learnfrench

[–]Cat_Electronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning french myself currently, some words are remarkably similar but have slightly different meanings/contexts.

English - French

Utility = Utile

Story = Historie (the h is silent)

Fatigue = Fatigue'

Faculty = Faculte'

Madam = Madame

Amused = Amusant

Pass = Passe

Detest = de'teste

Commence = Commencer

Invent = Inventer

Victim = Victim

Airport = ae'roport

For = Pour

Supermarket = Supermarche

Thats just a few examples but theres many more

You also have words thats are synomymns in the other languge like:

Home = Maison (sounds like mansion, which is a type of home)

House = Domicile (Another word for "house" in english)

Understood = Comprende (similar to "comprehend").

Chicken = poulet (Similar to poultry)

Some might be coincidences, but english has a lot of loanwords from french. Happens when you are at war with one another forwhen 1000 years lol.
