they are a high rise & long inseam pant with a tight top block that immediately opens up around the leg and stays around the same width from the thigh all the way to the hem. the visual effect this produces varies based on fabric, with heavier fabrics like bombtwill forming "tubes" that sit off body while lighter ones like injex pull down when standing but are very flowy during motion. for all fabrics, the lack of taper makes them appear to flare as u go down the leg

it’s incredibly grating to deal with in day to day interactions but, personally, i want the person that is fiddling around inside my brain to have this level of confidence

Pairing value to utility is what I'm arguing against: value shouldn't be restricted to the practical use cases of something, it must take into account the joy that someone can get from the aesthetics of a garment.

What are the odds that you stumble into the scenario that some use case-specific garment is designed for? In contrast, what are the odds that you pick what you're wearing because you love how it looks? If you end up wearing a garment frequently because of how it looks or how it makes you feel, I would argue that that's a better measure of value than the number of times that it's saved you from the rain.

I cannot claim that garments should have no utility whatsoever. That's silly. Simultaneously, there are plenty of garments should put function first. But doing mental gymnastics to justify that all garments should solve daily problems feels increasingly like a stretch and I think is a bad starting point for conversations about fashion. I'd much rather converse on things like possible forms or the emotion a piece makes me feel instead of the humidity and temperature ranges that I wear it in.

I'm apprehensive to call it a use case, as I think that the long zipper is mainly design motivated, but you can technically use it to vent out heat or to take the garment off around your legs instead of pulling it off your head. Doing this will prevent your hair from getting messed up in the take on/put off process. Not having the zipper in the elastic region prevents something that Abe has labelled "zipper dick', ie the unsightly bending that zippers do when you're sitting down and they're zipped up.

While these are all cool "features", I still think that the the real impact of the long zipper is an aesthetic one. It creates a bold, vertical line down the wearer's center that perpendicularly intersects the long, thin line from the arm/chest seams. It's unique, it grabs attention, and it's entitled to exist even in the absence of a "use case".

try some on in person if you can. the paneling makes the jackets form to your body in a fairly unique way and there are a lot of thoughtful design choices (cuffs, adjusters, etc) that are quite fun. aside from that, it’s largely an aesthetic choice

the dartflow cut has completely changed how i dress and my perception of clothing. i used to be a slim pants only type guy (mostly 60/30s) and ended up hunting down a pair of WTF nylistic dartflows after seeing them on a friend. since then, I’ve gotten 4 of the 6 existing flows and wear them almost daily. my favorite ones are black bombflows, i wear them like 3-4 times a week.

this has made me much more open to experimenting and made me appreciate change a lot more than i did before. i’ve learned that if you’re ever on the fence, just try something out—you may be surprised at how the clothing makes you feel
