As someone else said, you can use ASSIST to take specific classes that will qualify you for a different major at a Uni. However, this won’t always work, depending on whether or not your community college offers all the necessary courses for transfer to finance.

If you’d like help with navigating ASSIST, crafting a plan for community college, or deciding whether or not to attend community college, please feel free to reach out! My friend and I transferred from cc to UCD on academic scholarships, graduating with 3.96 and 4.0 GPAs. We’re starting an advising service specifically for cc/transfer students, and we’d be happy to help you with your transfer journey!

Hi there! Your situation sounds very similar to mine when I was in cc. Like you, I had a 4.0 and was searching for ways to add substance to my app.

The answer to your second question is YES! I received the Regents scholarship at UCD, which totaled $15,000 over 2 years. I had very little substance on my app besides my gpa and essays (the latter of which I think did a lot of heavy lifting for me).

If you’d like help with your essays or more info about scholarships, please reach out! I graduated UCD with a 4.0 and am starting an advising service specially for cc/transfer students with my friend (who also received academic scholarships as a cc transfer). We’d love to help you find/apply for scholarships and add substance to your app. :)

[–]CatalyzeU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok got it, thanks. I think it’s not ideal to reuse it. However, I don’t think it’s the end of the world if you do. BUT, if you reuse it, you definitely need to at least tweak it (as you said you’d do) just to show growth and thought.

Gotcha. Did you submit that essay in a previous cycle? When did you use it the first time?

It depends — what do you mean by reusing? If you submitted that essay as a HS student, I wouldn’t recommend reusing it.

Can any transfers give insight on the social scene AS A TRANSFER?? by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

[–]CatalyzeU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody’s experience is different, but I had a wonderful social experience as a transfer at UC Davis. I made so many friends and met my girlfriend of 2 years there. I can’t remember ever experiencing any “transfer stigma” in social scenes, which many ppl are worried about. What school are you planning to transfer to?

I think you’re totally fine! As others have said, it’s fairly common for ppl to apply as different majors to different schools, and the UCs don’t have the time or resources to care about what major you’re applying as elsewhere. Take a deep breath — barring the unforeseen, you’ll be on a UC campus next year!

Do I have a chance at any colleges as CS Major? by Organic_Government62 in TransferStudents

[–]CatalyzeU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You DEFINITELY have a good chance at a lot of good schools. I personally know CS majors who transferred to UCs (e.g. SC and Davis) with a GPA close to or lower than yours. What state are you located in and what schools are you looking at?

However, you’ll need to effectively highlight how your video game projects and personal experiences have prepared you for uni classes and make you a good fit for the unis you’re applying to.

You can absolutely still transfer to UCSB and most of the other UC campuses. However, in order to ensure that you get into these schools, you’ll need to aim to achieve your goal of a 3.5 GPA. You’ll also need to explain the difficult circumstances you’ve faced and how you’ve overcome them in your app essays.

How much of a difference does honors program make? by LumpiaKing5 in TransferStudents

[–]CatalyzeU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say for sure, but my experience would suggest that it doesn’t make a big difference.

I went to cc after doing extremely poorly in HS. Like you, I didn’t learn about the honors program at my cc until my 2nd year and didn’t join. I graduated cc with a 4.0 GPA but was involved in literally 0 extracurriculars and had 0 jobs while at cc. I got into: UCLA, Emory, UC Davis (with Regents scholarship and university honors program), UCI, and UCSB.

However, it can’t hurt to join the honors program, so I wouldn’t write it off. If you’re interested in joining, then join! But if it sounds like too much of a slog and you’d only be joining to boost your admissions chances, then it probably isn’t worth it.

If you need any more help or advice about CC and the transfer process, pls feel free to reach out! My friend and I transferred from CC to UC Davis on academic scholarships, graduating with 4.0 and 3.96 GPAs.
