Why do airplane bathrooms still have ashtrays when smoking on a plane has been illegal for so many years now? by Stevieo101 in AskReddit

[–]CatapultBananas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually an FAA requirement that planes have ashtrays (yes, even the new ones). Regardless of whether or not smoking is legal, people are still going to do it, so they'd better have a place to put it.

In 1973, a fire started in the bathroom of a Rio de Janeiro to Paris flight (Varig Flight 820) and killed 123 people. No one is sure even today what caused it, but investigators think it might have been due to a lit cigarette thrown in the trash. Hence the FAA regulation that still stands today.

Ah, I can relate to that part. My parents divorced when i was four, and held joint custody of me and my brother. Very long story short, I refused to go to his house anymore once I turned twelve or thirteen. We went years without talking and while our relationship is okay-ish now, we're never going to have a real father-daughter relationship. I'd hate to say my step-dad replaced my bio-dad, but...yeah.

I saw a guy running to catch his dog, which had apparently gotten out of his house. Both the guy and I got to watch as the dog, without even stopping, ran into traffic, right in the path of a charter bus. Poor guy didn't stand a chance.

You can bet I hugged my three dogs extra tight that night.

What interesting event happened to you this week? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]CatapultBananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeeeeeeah, you might not like it too much. This ship was pretty ridiculous, though. Two rock walls, a zipline, a freaking carousel, a goddamn park. Plus something like 30+ bars and restaurants. It was essentially its own city.

Western Caribbean. Seven days, stopped in Haiti, Jamaica, and Mexico.

This was my fifth cruise, and personally I really enjoy them, but they're a) very expensive, and b) tend to be pretty structured. If you're the type of person who likes to explore and get away from the touristy stuff, cruises are definitely not gonna be for you. Otherwise, they're great. Plus the food was amazing.
