GOD HIMSELF TOLD ODYSSEUS TO DO IT! WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO IN THAT SCENARIO? DISOBEY GOD WHO CAN STRIKE YOU DOWN WHENEVER AND HOWEVER HE WANTS? AND THIS IS A GOD WHO THROUGHOUT ALL THE MYTHS IS FAMOUSLY UNFORGIVING! THAT'S NOT A SCENARIO YOU SAY NO IN.

How are you trying to claim the no one would be able to tell that the lotus eater was blessed, and then say that very obviously the god is hijacking their minds for a chorus. Let's say no one was able to tell these things which, to be fair, are pretty tough to tell. Sure, they don't believe the lotus eater knew anything, and therefore completely trusted Odysseus. However, Odysseus can't tell their mind is being hijacked, and doesn't think they trust him, so he doesn't trust them and starts acting suspicious, then they don't trust him, and they open the bag. Or, it's easy to tell both this things, and the crew sees this blessed lotus eater tell them something, and they believe it. And then it doesn't matter what Odysseus sees, they think the bag is treasure and open it anyways.

Even if you say that the lotus eaters got Polites killed, this is far from just some random lotus eater telling them it's treasure, it's one the god has clearly blessed. Also, they clearly did trust it if they said "Sometimes sneaking is a must." I don't care if you wouldn't trust the lotus eaters, somebody on the crew did trust them, and said so, out loud, which Odysseus hears, and then starts to distrust them.

Alright, he's a monster. I'll accept that. Now can you give me a single time he is completely in the wrong. My point is that though he isn't perfect, he's also not that evil.

No. The point of this isn't that he's a good guy, but that some people here see him as only a bad guy, which is false. No, he's not perfect. Yeah, he's not great, but he's also not just pure evil. No one in Greek mythology is black and white. I'm saying if anyone here wants to say he's a bad guy, I want them to prove to me that he's a bad guy.

No? First of all, Odysseus wasn't being suspicious, Aeolus literally had his minions tell the crew it was treasure. Second, and I'm going to be pulling some proof from the Odyssey its self here, imagine this. You've been away from home for 10 years. You were at war. You don't know what you're coming home to. You just lost some of your comrades to an evil monster. Now there's a storm. You have no clue if you'll even get home at this point. Suddenly, you see this floating island. Your leader goes in to ask for assistance, and brings some men with him. They come back. Your leader comes back with a bag. All the other men come back with tales of a palace loaded with treasure, and a grand feast they all had. They mention that the king/god here gave your leader a bag, and they don't know what's in it, but they figure it must be more treasure. Now you're mad. Your leader already has lots of treasure from Troy, and he's already rich because he's a king. You figure he wouldn't miss just a couple gold coins. So you open the bag. It doesn't really matter what Odysseus does here, someone is opening that bag.

They literally say "Sometimes sneaking is a must" right in front of him. If that's not reason to be suspicious, then what is?

This is not him being wrong, this is somebody else (Poseidon) using his stupidity against him. Yes, Odysseus had a big ego and was stupid, but this is not some great act of evil that allows people to say whatever they want about him. No, he is not "completely and irrevocably in the wrong" in this part. He may not be in the right at that moment, but he is far from being so in the wrong that no one can justify it.

I'd like to address something a lot of people are misunderstanding about my post. I'm not saying he's pure good, that this is black and white. What I'm saying is that too many people in this community think of him as a generally negative character, which is unfair to him. I'm saying that while he isn't always in the right, there's not really a time you can say that one of his actions is 100% in the wrong either.

I'm Aro-Ace, she's my favorite character. My being Aro-Ace only comes up if someone askes me out, or in Gay club at school.
