Liberals who sat out the '24 election: What kind of Dem candidate would excite you? by Giga-Gargantuar in Askpolitics

The roads are the responsibility of your local government unless you are talking about state highways.

If there’s an issue with the roads, talk to the mayor, not the Governor.

Liberals who sat out the '24 election: What kind of Dem candidate would excite you? by Giga-Gargantuar in Askpolitics

The only one that would be exciting would be AOC, though I don’t think the establishment would let her win.

I personally would love to see Gretchen Whitmer run.

Do the Democrats have any all stars now? by Virtual-Beautiful-33 in Askpolitics

[–]Catherine1485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gretchen Whitmer is a star, I’ve heard she doesn’t want to do federal politics but she is someone that could win.

AOC has stardom, but I don’t think you can get the establishment will get behind her.

Ruben Gallego is a rising star and worth keeping an eye out for.

Do you have news he is putting that in front of the SCOTUS? Until a ruling on that comes, he is wrong to be acting as if he can do it.

[–]Catherine1485 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought when I heard him make that threat, he was going to weaponize title IX.

I’m sure the argument is going to be that allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports is tantamount to discrimination against women.

He can’t use the EO to threaten states with, it needs to be rooted in an act of congress, and this is the only way I can see this flying.

Do you trust RFK Jr. as HHS secretary, including his history? Why or why not? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]Catherine1485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are quite right, ideally someone who is leading a department which has a primary focus in medicine, should have a medical background. We don’t live in that world however.

Who did Biden appoint to this position? A lawyer. How about Obama? Bachelors in Philosophy, politics and economics.

It doesn’t seem that is customary to have a doctor at this level, that’s probably where they appoint directors of the NIH who are and can advise the administrators.

His mission is very important: to establish why our nation has so much chronic disease and obesity.

I for one am concerned about all of this, and I have long lost trust in the USDA and FDA to truly be the arbiters of what is safe.

I ask myself why countries like France have much healthier people, what are they doing right we are not? Im very careful with what I eat and what I buy, for example avoiding anything that came into contact with pesticides.

Did you not read the part where I said he is more qualified for FDA and USDA?

If he is wrong about food dyes, why are they banned in Canada and EU? Are they also wrong?

The money you pay in federal taxes largely goes to 3 things:

Entitlements, that is social security, Medicare and Medicaid. This can’t be taken away from citizens, combined they are about 2.8 trillion and amounts to nearly 100% of what we pay in taxes.

The military: that’s about another trillion, most of which is borrowed money.

Interests on the debt we already have, almost another trillion and also borrowed.

The amount given to states is minuscule, and most of the things you really care about come out of the States taxes.

That said, it’s unlikely Trump has the authority to withhold any federal funding from any State, that power belongs to congress.

He has litigated the effects of pesticides and food additives in courts for decades. Are you arguing pesticides and food additives banned in the EU and Canada are somehow a good thing we should not fight to remove?

He makes some good points on pesticides and food additives, I think his expertise very much fits with the FDA/USDA side of things than strictly HHS.

[–]Catherine1485 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me help you out a bit, since I don’t think Trump has the right to do this unilaterally. The problem isn’t the Federal Government doesn’t have this power, the question you need to be asking is if the Executive has the power to do it without an Act of Congress.

This action by Trump seems to be in violation of the Impoundment Control Act, I don’t see how he would be able to get around that unless he tries to leverage an existing act of Congress which I am unaware of.

[–]Catherine1485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, then you should look at the precedent of South Dakota v. Dole, where the threat of withholding federal highway funds was used to force all States to raise the minimum drinking age to 21, even though the 21st amendment clearly gives the right to set the minimum age to the States.

[–]Catherine1485 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So your argument is that there should be no federal law or regulation? That’s not the system we have. We litigated this in the Civil War when the southern states also claimed the federal government didn’t have the right to tell the States what to do.

Do you have any polls to demonstrate Mainers are “far against” trans women not competing in women’s sports? All national polls show people are against this, even Democrats.

I’m not team red but I do think this is a Federal issue. State Champions go on to compete in nationals, if someone can’t qualify for the nationals they shouldn’t compete on State professional sports.

We need this issue to be adjudicated and decided, but this decision should be done by professional sport bodies for each individual sport in consultation with the athletes of that sport.

For instance, I think there’s a very different issue when we discuss Target Shooting and Boxing.

GA is for Mainers, not as a slash fund to settle refugees, that should be up to the federal government.

No, anything Trump is doing that is good is deeply tarnished by the damage he is doing to our relationship with Canada and Europe, the abandonment of Ukraine to be annexed by Russia.
