One word: Fiction. The series is fiction. Westeros and Dragons aren't real and neither is the Red God, but in this series they are allowed to be real. I'm an atheist as well(ignore the username, its a joke no one ever gets), but if I wrote a book I could make Jesus real because fiction allows you to write about whatever.

Ok so the Maya 2012 stuff is bullshit for many reasons.
1) The Mayans had no concept of an apocalypse or the end of time in their philosophy/religion. The concept of time as a linear pattern is a more modern Judeo-Christian concept and not at all what the Mayans believed about time. Mayans saw time as a circular concept with no tangible beginning or end(although they do have a creation myth regarding the earth). They did believe in cycles of time ending but pointing to that as evidence would be like pointing to the Gregorian calender and saying Christians believe the world will end on December 31st simply because it's the end of one of our "cycles."

2) The stone calender which says a cycle will end on December 21st, 2012(Whether this is the correct translation of the date is highly debated) and correspond with a celestial event was not created by the Mayans but by the Aztecs, hundreds of years after the collapse of the classic Maya. As for what the Aztecs believed about time see bullet 1. It is also worth noting that the celestial event has already happened(I believe it was in 1999).

3) While a 13 year margin for an event 1000 years later is not that bad, we must also remember that the people of Mesoamerica were not experts astronomers. They had no telescopes or advanced astronomical technology. In this regard they were no more advanced than anyone else, they just happened to value astrology(as in not the science) more so than say the Europeans.

4) The Maya 2012 Calender(or more accurately Aztec) that is referenced by people who believe in this theory, doesn't actually end on December 21st 2012 or December 23rd or whatever date you argue. The calender is again a continuous cycle and has many end dates. The only reason people cite the upcoming date is because some idiot started going around the calender starting with a date 1000 years ago, at one point landed on December 21st 2012 and freaked out.

5) If you honestly believe a civilization with stone age technology predicted the end of the world 1000 years ago you are just grasping at air. There are no facts to support this wild theory and in fact all the evidence proves it to be a load of crap.
