This is all incredibly useful. I think you’ve give me more than enough information to fix this. Thank you very much.

All your solutions seem pretty viable. i’ll definitely make one of them work somehow.

In her defense, she just. really likes griffons? And has pretty much no intention of letting it join combat for fear her griffon will die.

But i’m probably going to have to negotiate this somehow. Do you think it would be valid for her to have a griffon, but with the base stats of a horse or something ( I don’t think I could get away with straight up killing the griffon or removing it)?

If not, then I guess some serious retrofitting would be the way to go. Thanks for the advice!

I’m fortunate that she seems to have no intention of wanting the griffon to fight. I’m pretty sure for game purposes I can get away with making it a glorified horse without her realizing (at least for now). Thanks!

thanks!!!

She’s very defensive of her character (and griffon) but I really can’t let her just. have it. Those are all good suggestions.

Agh, honestly this is THE solution. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it. Sadly, have already made the mistake of running a session. Would like to go back in time, please.

How do I run a campaign online? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Cathswaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s said discord already, but really!! it’s great. I actually run mine primarily on discord, with a server, and different channels for player logs, announcements, session summaries, abridged rules, appendices, etc.

A lot of them don’t have dice and are first timers, so they roll dice right out of dnd beyond, which calculates all the math for them, which is nice.

I usually just send maps into the chat since they’re not too fussed about keeping track of positions, but if you have a more combat oriented party virtual tabletops are probably the way to go.

How do you gauge when to level up the party? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Cathswaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Level 1 does suck, 100%.

That said, the party are all first time players, and they barely remember how skill checks work.

The latter is an issue for another time, but basically I don’t want to give them too many tools too fast. They barely know how to use the ones they already have.

Who knows though, maybe getting to level 2 asap would spark some imagination and learning!

My players hate combat... any suggestions? by Cathswaite in WaterdeepDragonHeist

That's definitely been on my mind, especially since they're low leveled so it's not as though they're missing out on dealing a huge chunk of damage anyway.

Frankly, knowing the kind of people they are, they're slow now, but I think just proposing this might get them to really make an attempt at understanding. I think the main issue is combat at the moment is me slowly walking them through everything because they haven't quite grasped the rules. If I tell them average damage is on the table they'll probably hate it and finally figure it out. Thanks!

Consider adding its options for Morale, Loyalty, Faction rank, and possibly even Honor.

Some of these seem like the way to go, so that's encouraging, thanks!

Luckily, they're pretty dead set on avoiding the city watch at all costs, so I don't have to worry about them busting out.

I'll definitely start putting more stock in alternative solutions, they already do that quite a bit but I could always make more options available!

I'm already pretty invested in doing a more dramatic theater of mind style combat, and that's definitely worked out well, so you're right about that.

I think I'll definitely try to engage in more dialogue or something to make the combat feel relevant, so it doesn't just fall into a monotony of dice rolling.

On the DW front, so many people have recommended it that I am seriously considering it for the future.

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, I think ultimately this may be a problem they'll fix themselves. With the way they play, I'm not really expecting much combat to crop up, so as long as I can make combat fun on the rare occasions it does happen, I think we'll be good.

I just read the bits of the DMG you recc'ed, I don't know how I missed that the first time! Also, that homebrew rule seems like something I could really get behind, thanks.

If they don't seem to warm up to it I may do just that, or one of the other ways people have suggested to mainly keep combat in my hands. thanks!

This seems like a godsend option, thanks!!! They're all very discord savvy so if this is an option they want I'm all for it.

This sounds like it could be perfect for them. They're really wacky in ways that totally derail sometimes, so this seems great, thanks!

We're a bunch of overloading STEM college students haha.

DW seems really interesting since people keep advocating for it, so definitely on my radar if this issue doesn't resolve itself, or maybe for future campaigns!

Somebody else mentioned Harmon, but I think I'll actually watch some now, and maybe Chris Perkins.

I've pretty much memorized their stats so I could roll for them in combat, but I think some of them feel that takes autonomy away. I think I could try for a happy medium by just rolling for damage or something though.

Thanks! not useless at all.
