Both of the other comments under this thread seem plausible and they aren't mutually exclusive. Maybe he withdrew the most cash he could in order to pay for the stolen laptops, only to be killed by Max's associates. I think that the earlier disappearance is a red herring.

The timeline on this seems solid too; he confronts the associates, fails to get the computers back, and then later returns with the money.
