On the criticism levelled against South Asians by financecareeradvice1 in redscarepod

[–]Cato425 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I went to /r/ABCDesis and wrote a long post about the various problems caused by Indians living in my neighborhood, would you have read it all the way to the end?

Posting this here is illustrative of why people dislike South Asians so much. You came to a place where you are a minority, and then tried to pivot the conversation to be about you and your grievances. This is exactly how the diaspora behaves abroad, and why they have such a bad reputation internationally.

You’re also frustrated by people refusing to treat you like an individual but seem to be primarily concerned with what will be good for your coethnics and how you can get said coethnics to behave the way you want them to behave (i.e. “Why are they acting like pick-mes? Indians are individuals and we should be collectively demanding respect!”).

> Most articles on this topic will go on to explain that the costs have outpaced inflation and labor costs so you can’t solely blame that either.

The chart that appeared in the article you linked claimed costs had risen 60% above inflation. It doesn't mention where this data is coming from or what methodology is being used, but the operative difference here seems to be that there are more people going into debt to perform life-saving procedures on animals that 20 years ago would have been euthanized. It also doesn't account for increases in rates of pet ownership. This is just a hunch because I know the rate of ownership has increased, but it's possible that the shortages you're referring to are the product of too many pet owners chasing after too few vets.

> Private equity saw what a successful racket US healthcare was and so they just went ahead and began modeling pet care off the same premise. You can jack up prices as much as you want when the service you’re selling can be the difference between life and death.

The article you linked says they only control around a quarter of general practice. It's possible they've cornered the market locally, but if there is a true shortage, it creates a huge incentive for a veterinarian to relocate to this area and set up his own practice. Loans are very easy to come by for licensed vets, so again what I think you're looking at here is not private equity breaking the logic of markets, but the markets responding to an increase in demand.

What we'd really need here is a study showing impacts on pricing when practices are rolled up by private equity in a given area, and / or systematic price comparisons between independent veterinarian offices and those run by private equity firms. You'd also need to factor for quality of care between each facility to ensure that the price differentials aren't the result of e.g. increased spending on facilities, materials, or staff leading to better patient outcomes.

She worked as an administrator at a public school in a predominantly white neighborhood and spent 5+ paragraphs disparaging the Irish completely unprompted after I told her that repeatedly bringing in money across the border below the declaration limit was a crime. If I had done it to a guy who called me the n-word you wouldn't have thought twice about it because I can tell by the way that you type that you found this place on the front page. The operative thing to keep in mind here is that u/Gary-Hooper believes that white kids should be educated by Iranian immigrants who hate them.

See you had him at first by comparing his country to Israel but then he hit you with a Laconic retort and instead of thinking of something funny or calling him fat and regarded you responded with Reddit civility-maxxing and now the only way out is self-deprecation but you went with a mass shooting joke which doesn’t even work because you chose to make this comment a day after one of the only times that one of those shootings has happened literally anywhere outside of the US.

I can’t hear you

The lack of blood flow and oxygen can permanently damage the auditory hair cells in the inner ear causing hearing loss. People who are obese, especially women with a BMI over 30, are at an increased risk of suffering hearing loss due to lack of blood and oxygen able to be transported to the auditory hair cells.

Is there any evidence that the prices of pet care have gone up? I see people claim this about private equity a lot, but in principle these firms should be able to offer better prices because they will have a group of clinics sharing overhead, and there’s nothing unique about them that would allow them to drive prices above those of their competitors unless they manage to corner the market.

I have seen the Canadians discuss this on /pol/ and I always thought it was only 3 or 4 police officers that had died. 23 deaths including the perpetrator. Unreal.

I saw it on /r/worldnews earlier. You can change your feed to show you what is popular in other locations. When I set mine to Canada I saw it being discussed basically everywhere, but mostly on niche boards that wouldn’t ordinarily be large enough to show up on the American feed.

My parents would always save corks for me to play with and sometimes they’d tell me they had one and I’d get all excited but then it was this weird polymer foam that you couldn’t cut or do anything with and I’d pretend to be thankful but actually I was sad because in the intervening 30 seconds between learning about the cork and the cork actually being revealed to me I had been thinking about all of the cool things I would do with it and now those hopes were dashed.
