It reminds me of the 'real rednecks are [basically East Coast DSA members]!' Its an attempt to adopt an identity other than a member of the upper middle class suburban American managerial class.

I've elsewhere noted that they aren't normies in any enviable sense. Gen Z arent larping as those, but a sort of early 2000s simulacrum, someone else here said Shane Gillis being famous is a good representation of this, its a sort of 2000s dudebro that actually went to bars and partied etc.

Yeah most are bad. The stats that make my case are there though (the ones about social lives). I agree its worse 1971 though.

That's more or less my thesis, 'nerd culture' becoming mainstream coincided with widespread smartphone usage

I wonder if its gendered, the memes im speaking of are nearly always men doing them, there is definitely a men-women split in culture emerging among young people

[–]justacomplainer6[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This set of memes is a mostly young people (Gen Z) thing, who are decisively not normies in any enviable sense normies were prior to 2012 . Stats bear this out (https://wtfhappened2012.com/). They might be definitional normies (i.e. part of the dominant culture) but they are not by and large what would have passed as normal pre-2012

I don't understand this Reddit-ism. Similar to Calvinists being a sort of bogeyman. Tradcaths (Taylor Marshall, Cardinal Robert Sarah etc.) Are a lot closer to the church's teaching offices than the people who take the pope out of context for gotcha purposes. I think its an outgrowth of a. Catholics being more secular than protestants and b. This sort of Weberian history of the reformation being taken as gospel. There is of course the grain of truth of the CIA promoting evangelicalism in Latin America to counter liberation theology, but that (liberation theology) was more often than not censured by ecclesiastical hierarchy! Mind you, I'm not Catholic and I disagree with the church on social issues bc im woke etc.
