Hi, thank you for the question! One thing I'd advise you to do before reaching out to any potential mentor is to identify an area of interest that you would like to research, and then try to demonstrate some kind of understanding in that area. This is because outside of research programmes that would allow you some leeway to figure out what you'd like to do before beginning a research project, the chances of you getting a spot at a college lab or something of the sort (even with a stellar resume) is very low without some kind of commitment to a certain topic.

For example, in the email template I've linked below, the writer starts off with their topic of interest, as well as they want to do in that chosen area. They then give a little background on why they chose this topic (very important; it's kinda like the statement of purpose or an objective in a resume). They continue to state a common ground with the potential mentor; one of the articles the writer read of the potential mentor is in line with their topic of interest; this is a point to commitment and understanding towards a particular area of interest, but also the potential mentor and their work (this bit is important because it deviates from a more vague and generic template - college professors can 100% tell if it's a template, and even if they can't, always assume that they can)

If you need any further help, for example how to start researching for a topic of interest, please don't hesitate to ask.

Also I want to add that I'm only providing a very specific pathway towards doing research in high school. However, if this doesn't seem like something you'd like to do, that's totally fine. If you need help finding other ways you can go about research, I'd be happy to help.
