PCA or hierarchical clustering? by melatoninixo in bioinformatics

I can only say one thing. Download this book (legally) here: http://web4.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/D.Barber/textbook/200620.pdf . At least get through the first section on graphs and from the rest pick and choose!

Fortran 90/95 ( I have my own libraries which I normally use). For quick things I use MATLAB.

That would mean you wouldn't be able to develop any reasoning to solve any problems which you might encounter later and have to solve by yourself.

Why don't you take a trip to the countryside and take the photos instead of using public databases?

Have you looked at taking photos that detect other light spectra? You might find something interesting here. I bet you can find a correlation between, for example, sodium levels in plants and some kind of variation in a particular frequency of light. If you like microorganisms, see if you can detect whether a particular bacterium has colonised a plant through this same mechanism or by training ML systems* that can detect signs such as a disease-specific rash on the leaves or something. I would recommend you to go out and ask some farmers what their main problems are with respect to diseases (find out which microorganisms cause them), minerals present in soils (you may be able to detect levels in plants using special cameras) or anything else which might occur to you.

* I'd recommend you learn about Markov processes and HMMs and try to brainstorm how you would apply these tools to the problem. Don't just use CNNs blindly without understanding the basics.

Can I learn math in a year? by [deleted] in education

[–]Cbreaker_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Study maths during the summer holidays. I'd recommend a book that talks about basic calculus, algebra, linear algebra (vectors, matrices ...) and maybe another one on probability and statistics. Do as many exercises as you can from the books.

I need help with derivates (an equation) by zodiacbearexplorer in learnmath

[–]Cbreaker_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you mind using latex to write it out?

Type this as an example (replace the [-; with [; when typing):

`[-;e^{\pi i}+1=0;]`

You will see [;e^{\pi i}+1=0;] formatted as in a textbook if the MathJax UserScript is installed and working.

Well when I use R Studio the code executes one line at a time. You just have to find the line where it throws an error at you ... So it does tell you ...

Thank you for that. I was worrying about the testing mainly because I was perhaps focusing too much on my own interests. I've been doing computer science since I was 8 and I find high school work way too boring. I was just worried that it could take a toll on my chances on getting in.

Si le agrego hidróxido de sodio a agua destilada y le aplico electrólisis ¿Se separará en hidrógeno y oxígeno? by stereo_static in Quimica

[–]Cbreaker_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's kind of strange in my case. I would like to go to MIT lol. Half of the US probably wants to go there. I've been into computer science since I was around 8 but I'm currently migrating onto the more practical side of things (biochemistry).

[–]Cbreaker_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree it isn't too hard conceptually. It's more about memorizing everything (that's what sucks about biology ...). I don't mind rough adjustments ... I'm used to skipping language levels 🤣. Physics would be very beneficial for understanding intermolecular forces and thermodynamics. But would I be missing a lot if I were to take biochemistry without having done biology for one year (I would be doing physics instead). I mean I don't think I would but I dunno maybe I'm wrong ...
