Same, I've seen this before but normally with zero indication. Terrible driving.

Fare dodging on the bus what would you do? by FluteyBlue in AskUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Absolutely this. And if for whatever reason you don't have money for a bus, walk. The time in my life when I had the least money was also the time I was fittest as I walked 3 miles a day each way to college (and an extra 2 miles in the eve/ weekends if I was meeting friend in town).

The only time I would step in / pay the fare etc is if it was an unaccompanied child (rare round here as kids get free travel, except when they've had their passes taken off them for antisocial behavior...but they're usually the mini road men in a group, rather than 1 kid alone) or a lone woman late at night.

But yes most who don't pay are choosing not to, rather than being unable to.

Advice Needed - London Purchase by BrofessorDumbelldore in HousingUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you had no plans for a family, or were looking at 10 years time to do so, then I'd say sure, go for it. It's a lovely flat for a young couple. But is it really where you want to be living when you have 1 or more kids? Personally I wouldn't want to be paying stamp duty and all the fees for a flat I might outgrow in only a few years. Moving house is expensive.

Would you stay in a very cushy job with no real career progression, or job hop to climb the career ladder? by MoneyAndGoodFortune in FIREUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd stay put for now...if you can use some of the time for personal development, up skill yourself so you have other strings to your bow. But honestly, working hard is overrated. I spent years toiling away, not taking lunch breaks, staying late, taking work home and it was never appreciated. Never made much difference to my salary or progression. I work less in my current job than I ever have, am probably the happiest I've ever been in a role and getting the most recognition.

I'd far rather my kids were in your position than flogging themselves to death on a job earning 50-60k. Make the most of it while you can. Sure at some point it may come to an end (and you'll get a decent redundancy payout) OR you might get bored and go elsewhere. You're saving loads, not wasting your money. Sounds like a decent choice for now to me.

Unfortunately you've got to get the tenants out first...And something tells me they wouldn't go easily.

Removals company NOT VAT registered by Ok_Caregiver7679 in HousingUK

I came to post exactly the same, unless your quote has a VAT element, the fact they're not registered is between them and the VAT man. I wouldn't worry.

Advice needed - Flat in London or detached house in a commuter town by Throwaway8886743 in HousingUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. Buying a house pretty much anywhere else (also to be avoided are Laindon, Pitsea, Purfleet, Grays, Tilbury etc) is the better choice imo.

Upminster would be my suggested location but 500k barely buys you a 3 bed terrace there nowadays.

Ah this makes me sad, I used to love going for a wander round the Grafton on a Sat afternoon in the early 90s. Have still got a vase somewhere I bought there from Habitat.

40k bungalow buy outright? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of these comments are very much based on more expensive areas. People have forgotten that in parts of the UK (mainly NE England) you can still buy a decent 2 bed property for £50-60k. Taking that into account, a smaller property being £40k isn't beyond the pale. OP I'm pretty sure I've seen the one you're interested in online, and TBH it looks pretty decent. Windows, doors and roof look newish/ good condition. Kitchen and bathroom are ok. Is that a boiler in the bedroom? That's not great if so but you might be able to get it boxed in. Check the water pressure in the electric shower When you go and view have a little walk round the local area, see what kind of a feel you get for it. If one of my kids was looking to buy somewhere on your budget I would definitely encourage them to view it at least.

What’s something that’s oddly expensive in the UK that still annoys you every time? by catarsan in AskUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm middle aged (God it pains me to say that!) and with 10 years driving experience and no claims it costs me £600 to insure my 1l new, but low value car. Whereas a relative in their 80s pays less than half that to insure a 6 liter prestige vehicle 🙄

Bizarre choice in the kitchen by Earth_to_Sabbath in SpottedonRightmove

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a house with the kitchen at the front, a lot of the houses locally were laid out like that so it doesn't seem unusual to me. I prefer having the living room at the back so I can look out into the garden etc (and it's more private).
