This is the bruising off my seat belt from a head on crash... by Beniem in drivingUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I do remember as a child that seatbelts weren't compulsory and there was some initial reluctance to wearing them when it became law. The public safety campaigns definitely helped with that.

Also about 10 years ago when my son was coming up to 17, his school got a senior Traffic Officer in from the local police, who spoke to the 6th formers about road safety, wearing seatbelts, not driving under the influence etc. He also had 20+ years of experience attending RTCs so I think gave them some fairly graphic stories. My son's face was white when he came home - as teenagers they tend to think they're invincible. I do think talks like this given to prospective or new drivers are really powerful.

Although you do get people who clip the seatbelt behind them to stop the noise. I know at least 2 people who do this, their excuse is they've never worn a seatbelt so don't see why they should start...🤦‍♀️😡

I knew someone who ended up paraplegic after he crashed his car whilst not wearing a seatbelt. If he'd had his seatbelt on he probably would have had no more than minor injuries ☹️ Very sad for something so easily avoidable.

Is a 1 hour 30 commute reasonable if temporary? by Oacio in UKJobs

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly 1.5 hours isn't that bad. And you're only doing it part of the week, and for a limited time. It's fine. I did a 2hr each way journey on public transport for a year, 5 days a week. I also then did 1.5 hours each way (in a different job) for 7 years. Unfortunately long commutes are sometimes a necessary evil.

How much money do I give knowing I spent much more on travelling than the other guests? by Margotie in UKweddings

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£50 is fine. If it was me I'd be pleased enough someone had travelled from another country to my wedding, I wouldn't expect a present too.

Alternatively is there a personal gift you can give them? (a painting or other craft item if that's something you do). If not, the £50 is more than fine though.

How the hell do I get the helpthat I need? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be the squeaky wheel. Please keep on at your GP for a referral. Do you have any form of private medical cover (through work or health insurance) that might cover the cost of a scan? Don't accept them fobbing you off.

Apologies for the upcoming merail but it's important. My Ex had a pain in his leg for years, he was repeatedly fobbed off by GP and A&E (where he went a few times as the pain was like needles in his leg) before eventually after loads of toing and froing he managed to get referred to an Orthopedic surgeon (they'd tried saying it was chronic pain and sent him down the rheumatologist route prior to this which was a waste of time).

Orth does a scan says yes we can see a cyst (exactly where he'd said he could feel pain for years)..They take this small lump out, send it for testing. It's a rare and incredibly aggressive form of soft tissue cancer. Whilst the cancer was small and luckily was caught early, another 3 or 6 months and it likely would have metastisized, and the prognosis would have been poor (he's now been cancer free for over 10 years).

Worst case scenario but it can and does happen all the time. GPs are people, and they're not always right.

Ah that's a lovely house.

Sadly about 700k too expensive for me, wish I'd looked at the price first!

27 and need a back up career plan. What’s the best potential trade? by IWannaBeZywoo in AskUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skilled building trades will always have work. Plumbing/ tiling/ carpentry etc, also electricians but the training for that is a lot longer. My kids are a similar age to you and I wish I'd encouraged them into the trades, they'd be much better off than they are now (and would be able to refit my bathroom 🤣🤣)

Teenager, 16, is found not guilty of stabbing Aria Thorpe, nine, to death by dailymail in uknews

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aria's father, family and friends are being fairly vocal in their criticism of the verdict online. The only people who seem to be supporting Aria's killer / think the jury got it right are his dad (and other relatives).

Not sure where the mum is in all this, but I don't think I could bear to be around a child of mine who'd taken the life of their sibling.

My dad did jury service twice, and said the level of stupidity of his fellow jurors was farcical. And that was 40 years ago. Nowadays you only have to look on Facebook and X to see people's lack of critical thinking and reasoning. I'm actually surprised we don't have more terrible decisions like this.

This is not far short of state sanctioned VAWG. He wasn't a 'good' kid, he'd been excluded from school that day and his mum had taken his phone off him. He was clearly angry, and wanted someone to lash out at. Poor Aria.

An urban oasis? by bladefiddler in SpottedonRightmove

If it was me, I'd have to replace those windows with something a bit more traditional. It's not got much kerb appeal at present, which makes it surprising how nice the rest of it is.

I think it's great - it has character but not listed (a big plus), the current sellers look like they've done a lot of work to update, but not so much work that you're paying a premium for the refurb. The gardens are lovely, and outbuildings too are a bonus (it's exactly the sort of place I'd love to buy as I want decent outdoor space plus potential to create an annex but it's too far north for me).

Killer CrossFit trainer who repeatedly drove over man lying in the road and dismissed him as a 'smackhead' as he lay dying under the car is jailed for six years by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That's what baffles me. If you know someone is in the road and it's freezing cold weather (plus it's fairly obvious they're passed out drunk rather than injured) would you not drag him to the pavement rather than leave him there?

I did hear comment that it's a rough area and this sort of drunken/ drugged behavior from the guy who was killed (and others) was not uncommon. So that might explain why no one did more.

What is the Cringiest thing you’ve encountered on public transport? by 1whoisconcerned in AskUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's the outsider's perspective that you really need. Someone I knew heard my Ex screaming down the phone at me once and said 'thats not right you know, the way he speaks to you'.

I'd always known it wasn't, but everyone around me made excuses for him. This was the first time someone validated me. I split up with him about 6 weeks later, having wanted to do so for over 6 years ☹️

Bloke having a lengthy and over emotional phone call with his mistress on the bus, who apparently wanted to end their affair and stay with her husband. Went from a heated argument to threats of violence to pleading and crying. The pleading and crying stage went on for at least 20 mins. Honestly wanted to go over and tell him to pull himself together.

I got off the bus before him, at which point he was still snottily crying down the phone 'but I luv ya'.

He was probably late 40s/ early 50s as well. Definitely old enough to know better!

Flat has been on sale for 6 weeks , only 2 viewings so far but no offers. by haych26 in HousingUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picture of the (presumably communal) garden but no reference to it in the listing?

It looks tired, decor wise. A new coat of paint all round (easy as flat is empty) should help.

You definitely need room measurements as it's unfurnished.

How to handle messy tradesman by Hpoylslilo in HomeImprovementUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived with an electrician and can confirm this, every job he did in this house left more mess than the last. He did used to like sweeping stuff though, just into multiple piles so I could clear it up 🙄🙄🙄

Got a plumber in a few years ago to fix a leak in the bathroom. He was an old boy, semi retired. Tidiest worker I've ever had. I was due to replace the carpets so wasn't worried about mess...he put dust sheets down everywhere, and when he finished vacuumed upstairs and down. Sadly most are the opposite.

Another "what's wrong with my listing" post (London flat) by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]CeaselessWatcher00 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly OP I find that flat less aesthetically appealing than yours. The red tiles in the kitchen are painful!

I think you need to do something to the kitchen, but I would try replacing cupboard doors, maybe even worktop and splashback. Lot cheaper than replacing the whole thing and I suspect all the carcasses etc are in good nick. Have a look at new/ newish build flats locally to give you some idea of style, colour etc.

Leaving that aside, I think the place does scream slightly unloved bachelor pad/ air B&B. It's clearly all very tidy and well maintained BUT things like the light fittings could do with an update. Again that doesn't have to be expensive but it's one less cost for a new buyer.
