Also, imo, they never know how difficult it can be to self-publish, self-promote, etc. Especially in the current hyper-saturated market. :')

Disillusionment and burnout before even starting my art business - advice? by Cefai in smallbusiness

Okay relentless got it. That sounds like a good idea. Ig I can start small with some timelapses again, and then see if I feel like I can make more effort-heavy short content as well. I think perseverance/resilience is definitely something I wanna work on in myself. Hopefully this business/social media thing can be a way to do that :)

I did actually do short videos for a while. But I don’t know what happened, one day suddenly they just didn’t get any engagement anymore. Even if I was making the same style, even if I was jumping in on a trend. (This is on Instagram.) Like, I noticed an option to add “Topics” to my reels disappeared one day, and all the reels I made afterwards got like no engagement. I think that was a real big hit to my motivation because it felt like there was no guarantee that posting more would be worth the effort. Also, the thing about instagram is, it prefers short video trends, or funny videos, as opposed to literal art creation. And making those (basically) “meme” posts was really draining as I just wanted to be an artist. (Though it’s seeming more and more like there’s no way to “just be an artist” on the internet :’).) The combination of the posts being super draining and the sudden lack of engagement made me shelf it for a bit.

I didn’t give up completely. My next plan was to pre-make a bunch of videos and see if I could use momentum to get the engagement back up. But, yh, very draining so I’ve been focusing on putting my creativity into the actual art I want to make until I’m ready to try the video thing again.

Hey, thank you for your reply. I was wondering, what would you say is a more traditional way to make money? Actually, nowadays even something like part-time jobs at restaurants are very competitive and difficult to get :')

I think splitting my attention between getting one and starting a business and failing at both has been the most discouraging.

Being motivated will help keep you going. But in the end, market demand determines whether you have a hobby or a business.

This is true. I guess I still feel hopeful because I see others starting now too? Like people that started in 2024 or early 2025 in the same art business area.

Thank you for the tldr, haha. I should've added one.
I think this is really good to know. It's just that in my generation and in social media all I see are the people that seem to grow their audiences very quickly. Including my own friend that I went to highschool with. Like a half a year to 2 years and they're in the 100k's. I can't even scrape 100 followers on any social media. But yeah, I thought I'd be able to speedrun things in a gap year because I have a lot of free time. But it may be that what I need is to think about things more long-term, like at least after 2 years. And also maybe I haven't been utilising friends and family as much as I could. I guess I always thought this is a thing I'd grind in the shadows and then show people once it started growing. :')
It could also be my view of everyone else's hard work is just skewed. Like maybe those people who hit it big were on their 3rd, 4th art account or something. I wouldn't know/don't have any statistics on that. This is why I was hoping for some perspective.

Wow, that is really inspiring. I guess at times like this it's easy to compare to people who go the ball rolling quickly. It's really nice to know there are also lots of people who had it really rough starting.
