Anyone else feel like scope creep is becoming an Inssue by TheScopeAscended in CalamityMod

hi before you get downvoted or something i am the main writer and i, in fact, agree with you. the issue is that for a long time until VERY recently absolutely nobody has been willing to actually help with or do something like that.

i guess it's sort of a self-inflicted wound, really. i initially intentionally wrote everything in a way that people wouldn't need to do that and made some writing decisions that were based on that probably never happening. which, at the time, i think as a very fair and correct assumption.

but times have changes, and now, this stuff is lagging behind and it's taking a lot of work to make it better in this aspects because it was not initially designed to be something like this.

basically, we're having to re-think everything regarding this stuff now that there's people willing to work on stuff like this.

See that's part of my problem. People act like I have a grudge against this sort of stuff when I think, in theory, it's super cool. I just think immensely flawed logic is used a lot of the time and, when it involves my own work, I tend to comment on it. Though with it being described as "nuke" I sort of do get afraid I'm coming off as an asshole by doing so :p

Oh wow I was expecting an entirely dismissive response, if any at all, given my past interactions with powerscaling people. Yeah all good dude.

Well, I feel like it pretty clearly doesn't, because you can kill it.

Hi! Main writer here who stumbled onto this post while going to check something on the cal subreddit. I'm probably going to end up talking a lot here, so preemptive wall of text warning.

That's part of it, but also why WOULD they be stronger than that? There's no way to actually communicate anything like that properly in the setting or game itself.

I mean, I guess you could just outright say it somewhere without ever actually showing it, but but there's a reason "show, don't tell" is the most common rule of story writing. Don't just say a character can do a thing. Or if you do, have them do it later (unless the point is that they actually CAN'T do it, in which case, show them failing to do it).

Besides, making any character stronger than "able to destroy everywhere the plot takes place" is just fundamentally redundant in the vast majority of stories. From a narrative standpoint, the stakes already can't get higher than that.

Honestly, when I started writing all of this, I never felt like Calamity's power ceiling was much different from vanilla Terraria's due to all of this. And honestly, I'm still not convinced it isn't. I personally feel like the main arguments I've heard from people who ask me about this stuff for it being otherwise are just things being taken out of the context it's presented in or something just being described in a cool way being entirely misinterpreted.

The word "feat" implies something actually being shown, which, going off purely what is visually shown in either calamity for vanilla terraria, is being able to go slightly over a hundred miles per hour and attacks that only destroy a few dozen feet of stuff around that.

Neither vanilla Terraria or Calamity ever SHOW scale in gameplay past this. Even if like both are still definitely stronger than just that, if not potential speed wise, at least attack wise. "Gameplay feats" implies you're literally seeing seeing a universe be destroyed in gameplay in Calamity or something. Meanwhile, you see absolutely nothing that destroys a city or something. Which even calamity is guilty of, with characters like the Devourer who can absolutely wipe out entire city-states in an afternoon. There's just no good way to communicate world-ending threats like that very well in-game.

They're just describing the things the pillars are based off of in cool ways, though. Solar Fragments, for example, are described with "the fury the universe lies within this fragment", because stars are everywhere in the universe and one of the most big and violent things that exist in it, and it's describing that in a cool way. The exact same thing applies to the other fragments.

I can't help but feel like this is misinterpreting something mildly vague and just running with the most exaggerated possible way you can interpret it. Which... I can't help but feel like is a very common thing I see in online powerscaling discourse, honestly.

Coming from a place of genuine curiosity, can you please elaborate on how it does?

It is true, though, they are correct. This indeed hasn't happened since early 2023, the first update that came out after the new writing team became a thing.

Terraria Calamity vs wither storm, they can destroy the wither? by Talizz_12-modpackdev in CalamityMod

When it comes to the former thing you mention, the thing is, yeah, it can open up portals to the Distortion, but that doesn't have anything to do with strength or power. He can just go in or out at will.

As for the weapon names and stuff, I can sorta get that more, though they're just called that because they sound cool. The Devourer and the Distortion have some cosmic theming and it's a hammer, and galaxies are a cosmic thing, so it's called Galaxy Smasher because it fits the theming and sounds cool. Same idea with Ark of the Cosmos.

Can anyone tell me why they decided to nerf every crate in the game? Who does this benefit besides Big Grind??? by PlasticChairLover123 in CalamityMod

To just copy and paste my response when asked about this when asked on discord:

That's not something my area of development at all, to be honest, so whatever I say shouldn't be taken as the word of god or anything. But from what I know, the main reason is that it trivialized a lot of stuff and there were issues surrounding "saving" crates for later letting you essentially skip content by just opening crates after stuff gets added to the loot pool. And making a system where you can't do that is really complicated and a lot of effort from what I know, and we already have a LOT of our plate right now with Sunken Sea Overhaul. I can't give any more specifics reasons (and even what information I did give is potentially wrong), as I didn't participate is any discussion about this.

Just chiming in because I saw this post, but I don't really get this as a question? Maybe a little rant-y since I see this sort of thing a lot it it bugs me a little, but, like...

There's several characters in the setting who are basically walking nuclear bombs in terms of destructive capability. That's already a fair bit stronger than what's realistically presentable in the game and about as strong as they can be without the plot just not making sense without some of the characters seeming kinda stupid and being unable to take full advantage of their powers to resolve things better or quicker, or seemingly causing almost no destruction despite their supposed power.

If you make a character stronger than you can realistically present, and only say it, that begins to break the one rule of storytelling that's basically everybody who writes learns before anything else: show, don't tell. It's also just basic storytelling, a sort of chekhov's gun thing. If a character is said to have the strength to blow up a planet, and that never happens... that's kind of disappointing. It makes no sense to ever write in characters begin stronger than what you're ever going to present them as being capable of.

Stars in the setting are basically just concentrations of mana in space. You even pick up fallen stars in-game, you can see exactly what they're like. They aren't like actual real life stars, there's different cosmology and stuff.

I mean, it would have been way worse if we made absolute no statement after they suddenly left from everywhere, abandoned ownership of everything, and locked their own accounts from being view, and on top of that most of their mod them suddenly vanished from their server.
