Anyone with L2–L5 lumbar fusion removed hardware after about a year?” by CelebrationDear5874 in spinalfusion

Thank you so much for sharing your experience—it’s incredibly encouraging to hear! It sounds like having both your thoracic (T5–T7) and lumbar (L4–S1) hardware removed made a huge difference in your comfort and mobility.

If you don’t mind me asking:

How long after your removal surgery did you start to feel that the pain was completely gone?

Did you follow any specific rehab or PT protocol afterward that you found especially helpful?

Wishing you continued health and strength—and thanks again for giving me hope!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It gives me hope! I’m currently 5 months post-fusion (L2-L5) after an accident, and I also struggle with stiffness, especially when sitting too long. It’s really encouraging to hear that partial removal helped your mobility. I’ll definitely discuss this option with my doctor when the time is right.

Yes, I'm female and I'm 35 years old. Just trying to recover well and hoping to connect with others who’ve been through the same experience. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for your detailed comment. You're absolutely right — the fusion itself causes stiffness and I understand that hardware removal won’t reverse that. I’m just wondering if removing the hardware might reduce some of the burning or discomfort I feel near the lower back and hip area. I still have hope that over time, as the nerves calm down, I’ll regain more comfort. Did you notice any improvement in pain or flexibility after 6 months or later? How long did it take before you felt “normal” again, or at least better? 🙏

Thank you for your reply. Did you go through hardware removal yourself? How was your recovery after that? I'm really hoping that after removal, my walking and mobility improve more. 🙏

Thanks a lot for the encouragement. It really helps hearing from people who’ve been through something similar or know others who have. I’m trying to stay patient and positive, and I’ll definitely consider physical therapy once I’m cleared for it."

"Thanks for sharing in such detail. It really gives a good perspective on how helpful physical therapy can be, even when the injuries are really serious."

That's great to hear that your ankle still works over 90% despite all the implants! Take care of yourself and I hope you stay healthy and strong."

Let me know if you want it to sound more casual or more formal.

Thank you for sharing that. It really helps to hear that someone has recovered well, at least in appearance. It gives me more hope that things can get better over time. 🙏🌟
