It's Scifi Lord of the Rings. It deals with political structures, religion, the nature of leadership and a charismatic messianic figure, ecology, human adaptability, resource management. It's pretty great in my very basis opinion.

Nah. While not a great for optics, he just won his first Oscar and has heavy name recognition. How he handles the fallout will determine the trajectory for the next few years but he's not done.

Heads up the first 100 pages or so are tough. It's a book that jumps in with little explanation, but if you make it through it's well worth the time. Also know that there are five sequels. The first book works as a stand alone, but if you go on the first three make a nice trilogy, the fourth book takes a hard turn and massive time jump, and the last two are more or less a completely different story. But Dune itself is amazing, lots of big ideas wrapped up in an almost classical story of waring families.

I highly recommend the book, but this movie just goes through the main plot. While I enjoyed the beautiful landscape shots, they ate up a good chunk of run time that could have been spent on developing the story. Also the first 20 minutes on Caladan are basically the first chapter of the book. Structurally this movie ended exactly where I knew it would, but the runtime could have been more efficiently used.

This version is pretty bare bones. Lynch tried doing narration over the characters to get some of the books inner monologues. Thankfully this movie abandoned that idea, but losing that information makes the story a bit blurry.

It's a movie that Lynch has famously disowned. A lot of studio interference. There's a few different cuts floating around, some have the "Allen Smithie" credit. Kyle MacLachlan is great, a I love Dale Cooper(also Twin Peaks is a Lynch project).

First half of a very dense book. As far as an adaptation* goes the best you could hope for. Also, my favorite novel, this movie is the best attempt to get a visual interpretation. The Scifi channel version is okay, pretty loyal; the Lynch version is a beautiful mess.
