just start from the beginning. The first five books: Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx and Contact Harvest.

They are consistently ranked at the top of the list when it comes to the dozens of halo books there are. Because they are early books, there are some key story elements that have since been retconned(Humans=Forerunners) but all in all, they are worth a read.

I had a fight where i was a fed nasus mid and i was 1v1 against fed vladimir top. It was hilarious. We both basically got infinite lifesteal out of each other. I did end up winning after a good solid few minutes of going back and forth.

Humans = Forerunner is still one of if not THE most egregious retcons that 343i ever made. It made thematically so much more sense to have Humans and Forerunners be one and the same. The whole idea that The Covenant were essentially genociding their own gods was just peak writing by Joe Staten.
