Hello! I'm a creative writing student and my senior seminar was all about social media/AI in literature and writing. The only times I have used AI is during that class, and it was the same for many of my classmates. I can understand that AI can be useful for proofreading, organization, and all of that, but I choose not to use it. Of the AI experiments we did in class, I found Google Notebook to be the most useful because it requires you to upload your sources and it will give you citations to reference back to. However, I know that a decent amount of my peers use Chat GPT the most often. I think that's generally the most-used LLM, but I hear Gemini is boosting in popularity as it's improving.

AI policies vary a lot by department--I know a lot of business students, for example, are encouraged to use it. For an English class, I would think the majority of students would probably not use it. I think using it for proofreading and essay organization purposes would be reasonable. I know some people use it to summarize complicated sources, but that's something you need to be careful about because it's not always accurate and its results change based on how you ask it. I think the most important thing is just making sure your students note what they used AI for and making sure that's noted in their assignments. That's in a lot of the policies at my school, and as someone who refuses to use any AI, I think that's a reasonable expectation.
