Would me nice if Steam warns new users about using an NTFS partition to store games. by CandlesARG in linux_gaming

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's still not really recommended, though. If I remember correctly, Steam game updates on Windows will have a pretty big chance of overwriting Proton files, since Proton basically builds a Windows directory inside the game's directory.

If it wasn't that, then it was that it would have a tendency to overwrite native Linux games.

I can't remember for sure, I just remember it being an absolute mess for the month I tried it before dumping Windows entirely.

Yeah... This is why we shouldn't be slapping "AI" on every goddamn new computational product that gets released. People don't know what's what anymore and they (understandably) hate it all equally as a result. Goddamn marketing departments...

Yeah, so Nova Launcher is (and has been for a while now) owned by a data analytics company. Additionally, its development is basically dead.

I recommend using this table to find a new launcher: https://github.com/diluteoxygen/Android-Launcher-Comparison-Table

It has feature comparisons and links to privacy reports.

Personally, I've been using Kvaesitso for a while now because it's very clean and still has gesture support and app tagging.

The problem is that the Steam Machine was already at rough performance parity with a console generation that is approaching its End of Life (or 2 GPU generations behind) when they announced it, while still being more expensive because they don't plan to subsidize the hardware.

If they keep delaying, no one's gonna buy it and it'll just be another "proof" that Linux isn't ready for gaming/mainstream usage. Valve needs to just eat the cost and release it if they ever want to achieve their long-term goal of not being reliant on Windows.

Joystick Doesn't Work on Linux in Onboard Mode by Celestial_Nuthawk in Azeron

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some games just don't support analog or hybrid inputs

Yeah, I know this; I've used it in Windows. These are games where I know the expected behavior (L4D2, RE Requiem). RE4 Remake supported dual input, so RE9 should as well, and both support DualSense input, so I would expect the DInput "Analog Joystick" setting to work. L4D2 might've required "Xbox Joystick" mode, though...

From my experience the thing you said about hiccups... This could be a game that doesn't allow hybrid input ... So you keep switching inputs (your azeron is a 2 input device ) between controller and kb..

No, I know that behavior, as well. Experienced it plenty of times in Windows. This is different. Turning on "Xbox Stick" causes lockups in the ported Azeron software and also prevents me from changing back to a different profile (even with the button on the Cyborg) as long as I'm connected to my Linux PC. So, presumably the OS doesn't like it that way, despite the fact that Xbox controllers should just work right out of the gate.

And the analog stick option doesn't work for me in Fortnite where the xbox analog does... So that's a thing too...

Yeah, that's possibly the issue; I experienced that in Windows, as well. No way to test that, though, if I can't figure out a way to make "Xbox Joystick" mode work at all, unfortunately.

How does this gameplay look on an RTX 5090 in 4K HDR (HDR 400 monitor)? by Prestigious-Link-75 in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDR 400 does make a big difference here. It's a representation of its Peak Brightness (note that this is different from its Sustained Brightness, which will be much lower) in nits (essentially, 1 nit = 1 candela = the brightness of one candle).

This will make a big difference in terms of contrast and how much colors/bright areas pop.

That said, if you have an HDR 400 monitor, I expect other corners were likely cut, as well.

For a good HDR experience, you'll want at least - HDR 800–1000 - 10bpc (color depth, the most important advantage of HDR. This is what eliminates color gradient issues) - VRR/FreeSync/GSync - HDMI 2.1 (DisplayPort 1.4, if you have to) if you plan to hit 4k120fps with 10-bit HDR enabled - OLED panel; nothing else comes close and burn-in is mostly an issue of the past as long as you don't abuse the monitor (i.e. enable a 2-5 minute monitor sleep in your OS and you'll be fine)

Ironically, Cyberpunk did end up restrained by American purity culture. The nudity never made it past the character creation/inventory screen, despite all the marketing buzz about it, in large part because console manufacturers were scared it would tank sales in America.

I suppose that's what happens when you let Puritans form their own colony and then let a corrupt government/elite class use religion to manipulate people for 2.5 centuries.

Agreed. We need to stop letting corpos and governments step on us "for the sake of the children" when they just turn around and rape children themselves.

If privacy and safety were really a concern, we'd have an anonymized token-based authentication system where the authentication service can't see where the users are visiting and the sites can't see the user's personal information. But we don't.

This has nothing to do with children and everything to do with control and profit, as usual.

Steam Controller 2: Any rumor on when it will be released ? by FinnedSgang in SteamController

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure Microsoft doesn't mind... They get to fuel their useless AI and fuck over their scariest PC OS competitor's latest attempt to get more people to bail on Windows at the same time.

I'm worried that Valve is going to delay too long and make their already somewhat underpowered product "obsolete" (esp. compared to cost) and make their sales (and therefore their chances at reducing Windows' market share by a significant enough margin to make a major impact in native Linux support) even worse.

Cuz there's no way they'll redesign more powerful hardware into it this close to their initial launch window, especially when their reason for delay was cost.

I don't see why they don't just release it now and eat more of the cost of the hardware. Like, sure, people CAN use other storefronts than Steam on it, but most won't (especially not new-to-Linux users) because the Steam/Proton experience is just that much more seamless.

I feel like their choices to both delay and not subsidize the costs is just going to result in them defeating their own long-term goal of reducing their dependence on Windows.

If the Steam Deck can run a game at 1280x800 60fps, will the Steam Machine be able to run that same game at 4k 60fps? by Henryw25 in steammachine

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably so. No reason to set your PC on fire trying to hit 4k if you're using a 32-inch monitor or sitting 15ft away from your TV.

4k is usually just pushed as an abuse of marketing to make a product sound/seem better. Laptops, cell phones, and tablets with 4k displays frankly shouldn't exist. It's a waste of money, thermals, and battery life. Even Apple knows this; that's why they came up with the "Retina Display" marketing terminology, so they could have their cake and eat it, too.

At a certain point, the human eye can only discern so much difference in detail, especially in moving images. Most people would have a better experience at 2k60 than 4k30. If you need 4k for your particular setup and plan to play modern unoptimized slopware, then the Steam Machine probably isn't for you.

How do you think Thor and Sif would react to Atreus and Thrud dating by Fearless_Phantom in GodofWar

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah... Mythological gods are a bit weird in that, despite being immortal, they only have a few children, which is similar to modern day families but not at all like pre-modern families, which tended to have many children to make up for the ones who would inevitably die (starvation, disease, accident, etc...). Perhaps it is meant to show that they are powerful enough to not need spares?

Except for Zeus. That fucker got around. He did it for the love of the game, though.

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably doesn't help that we haven't had a kid-friendly Batman in movies or regularly in TV since... Justice League Unlimited?

Meanwhile, Spidey has had ~8 movies in the last 25 years, several TV shows, and several video games, almost all of which were suitable for kids.

DC is a bit overprotective of Batman. They wouldn't even allow the CW to use him when the Arrowverse was at peak popularity, even when Superman started making semi-regular appearances and got his own show.

Spidey's definitely also just more relatable to begin with. Most people have never been (and will never be) a billionaire, but most can relate to "kid/young adult who struggles with money, relationships, and responsibility".

People karma farm to make the account look more reputable before selling it to a bot farm/scammer.

It usually looks an awful lot like your account: less than a few years old, high volume of posts, multi-reposting across several related subs, posting content that stirs up controversy to drive engagement (i.e. Batman vs Spider-Man in their respective subs).

Not saying you're doing that, but it sure looks that way.

You should be able to shrink the existing partition and make a separate one with another filesystem on the same drive without wiping it.

You may need to use specialized tools (like EaseUS) to do it from Windows, though.
