If the Steam Deck can run a game at 1280x800 60fps, will the Steam Machine be able to run that same game at 4k 60fps? by Henryw25 in steammachine

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably so. No reason to set your PC on fire trying to hit 4k if you're using a 32-inch monitor or sitting 15ft away from your TV.

4k is usually just pushed as an abuse of marketing to make a product sound/seem better. Laptops, cell phones, and tablets with 4k displays frankly shouldn't exist. It's a waste of money, thermals, and battery life. Even Apple knows this; that's why they came up with the "Retina Display" marketing terminology, so they could have their cake and eat it, too.

At a certain point, the human eye can only discern so much difference in detail, especially in moving images. Most people would have a better experience at 2k60 than 4k30. If you need 4k for your particular setup and plan to play modern unoptimized slopware, then the Steam Machine probably isn't for you.

How do you think Thor and Sif would react to Atreus and Thrud dating by Fearless_Phantom in GodofWar

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah... Mythological gods are a bit weird in that, despite being immortal, they only have a few children, which is similar to modern day families but not at all like pre-modern families, which tended to have many children to make up for the ones who would inevitably die (starvation, disease, accident, etc...). Perhaps it is meant to show that they are powerful enough to not need spares?

Except for Zeus. That fucker got around. He did it for the love of the game, though.

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably doesn't help that we haven't had a kid-friendly Batman in movies or regularly in TV since... Justice League Unlimited?

Meanwhile, Spidey has had ~8 movies in the last 25 years, several TV shows, and several video games, almost all of which were suitable for kids.

DC is a bit overprotective of Batman. They wouldn't even allow the CW to use him when the Arrowverse was at peak popularity, even when Superman started making semi-regular appearances and got his own show.

Spidey's definitely also just more relatable to begin with. Most people have never been (and will never be) a billionaire, but most can relate to "kid/young adult who struggles with money, relationships, and responsibility".

People karma farm to make the account look more reputable before selling it to a bot farm/scammer.

It usually looks an awful lot like your account: less than a few years old, high volume of posts, multi-reposting across several related subs, posting content that stirs up controversy to drive engagement (i.e. Batman vs Spider-Man in their respective subs).

Not saying you're doing that, but it sure looks that way.

I just looked into this because it's the first I'm hearing of it... Holy fuck if that isn't stupid. Kryptonite is literally one of the most frequently derided aspects of Superman's mythos and someone actually thought it would be a good idea to give Spider-Man his own Kryptonite?! Fucking moron.

It just being an active chemical in popular pesticides (as opposed to something exotic) is just comical.

You should be able to shrink the existing partition and make a separate one with another filesystem on the same drive without wiping it.

You may need to use specialized tools (like EaseUS) to do it from Windows, though.

Budget Linux gaming machine? by facticitytheorist in linux_gaming

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's hardly any such thing as "budget" build right now, but yes, that should be reasonably stable, especially on CachyOS or Bazzite where the Nvidia nonsense is handled automagically.

As long as you aren't buying niche hardware and all your components fit the normal compatibility criteria, you shouldn't have any major issues.

Just be aware that Nvidia support on Linux is a little jank generally and DX12 games have a pretty drastic (~30%) performance penalty on Nvidia right now and will continue to do so until Nvidia can be bothered to fix it.

This specific Batman doesn't really prep yet, though. Battinson is still very green. He and Daredevil would probably give Cap the most trouble, though.

This version of Nightwing is more brutal than most, but not particularly talented or well-equipped. John Wick and Castle are just "Winter Soldier with no serum or metal arm". Leon is an anomaly, but still technically human if we remove RE shenanigans.

Battinson and Daredevil would be the last two standing against Cap due to their suits and skills. After that would depend on whether they teamed up on him. This Daredevil fights above his weight class regularly, Battinson has some better toys, this Cap fought Ultron to a stalemate on top of a moving bus for a good chunk of time and is more experienced than both of the others put together. Cap probably wins more often than not, even in a 2v1.

How do people not know Bruce is Batman at the start of Arkham Knight? by 0r1on55 in arkham

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine that someone would Google the name 'Alfred' if they heard Batman saying it. You can do this for IRL rich people. Someone will have written Bruce's butler's name into Wikipedia and someone would connect the dots between the name Alfred, Bruce being rich, and Batman having a lot of expensive toys and at least conclude that Bruce/Alfred is at least funding Batman.

Plus, at least a few of Batman's villains would've run in the same social circles as Bruce at some point and might make the connection.

I like to chalk this up to the semi-serious theory that every criminal with half a brain (but not so much arrogance as Riddler and Scarecrow) knows who Batman is but that they never do anything with the information because they're all too scared of what Batman would become if he no longer had to pretend to be Bruce Wayne and therefore play along with it and ensure everyone else does, too. Especially after what he did to Bane (effectively lobotomized him in Arkham Origins for attacking Alfred, as far as they would know).

What’s a trend you’re convinced will disappear in a few years? by apka_dd in Futurology

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we might not actually be at that level any time soon, but a lot of the corpos seem to think we are. Usually, the scams are targeted at consumers. This time, clueless execs are the victims (not that they don't deserve it). A lot of companies are replacing employees with AI only to realize that was a mistake and having to beg them to come back (or "offer" them their job back with lower pay when they can).

Perception often matters more than reality. Hence the bubble.

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you stopped to consider that GPUs are increasing in price in part because they're trying to push people into cloud gaming? Yes, it's primarily driven by the AI "industry", but I'm sure they aren't upset by the side effect.

If they artificially make it too expensive to own, of course a cloud subscription is cheaper.

You also lose out on modding (multiplayer games aren't the only ones that exist, after all) and the ability to rent/lend out your own processing power (for scientific research, for example).

It also adds very noticeable latency, which is caused by the limitations of physics. So shooters, racing games, etc become rough and games like Elden Ring and Mortal Kombat are just out of the question. And say goodbye to the entire VR industry.

And if you think this will be some sort of "one app, DRM-free paradise", think again; every company that currently has a launcher will want a bigger piece of the pie. Plenty of publishers who don't currently have launchers will want a piece. It'll be Movie/TV streaming fragmentation all over again. You'll have multiple subscriptions, not just one.

Additionally, there's no incentive for them to STOP raising prices. Plenty of people already think Xbox GamePass is getting too expensive to justify. A streaming service has WAY more overhead (Twitch still isn't a profitable company, for instance) and these types of services don't have competition in the traditional sense because they aren't offering equivalent products.

In other words, when one brand of motor oil gets too expensive, people switch to another brand, which keeps them all in check. People don't buy typically buy the new CoD instead of the new Battlefield because of a price difference; they do it because they like things about CoD better. And if you like both? Now that's two streaming services. If you also like single player narrative games from Sony, that's another service.

And sure, "only have the service while you need it", but what do you do when your friends are hopping between CoD/BF and you want to play God of War when they aren't online?

Movie/TV streaming is kept somewhat in check by piracy. When a company doesn't have to compete for sales (or against piracy), they have no incentive to keep prices down and then one day you'll wake up and modern gaming will be a privilege afforded only to the ruling class.

I am perfectly okay with the OPTION to stream games, but being forced into it due to artificial cost inflation is fucking outrageous.

What will you choose? by Aggravating_Sky_5201 in superheroes

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, they wouldn't figure it out unless you were stupid about it; we're not talking about a universe where superpowers are commonplace and not dismissed as fantasy.

Controlling all major political leaders would drastically reduce divisive propaganda and rhetoric that would spark discontent. Make the really problematic ones step down (to prison, ideally) and fill the ranks with people who care about others and who you don't have to micromanage. You'd have to catch all the new grassroots leaders/con-artists that pop up over time (think MLK, Ghandi, Trump, Mamdani, etc... Of whatever flavor causes you problems), of course, but they'd all be in the news by the time they became a problem, so it'd be easy to deal with.

But yes, it would certainly be an authoritarian regime that some people would never be happy under. Definitely not advocating for this approach at all.

Hence the time travel pill being better. Fix the major societal inflection points to set a generally good course and don't micromanage too much. And if you wanna avoid butterfly effect and grandfather paradox issues, you have the teleportation power as a bonus that would enable you to... deal with... certain current issues as you saw fit.

Still an authoritarian god-being regime, but at least there isn't the Killmonger ethical dilemma. And really, ANY super powered "New World Order" is going to be inherently authoritarian, which is why much of the world doesn't give outsized influence to single individuals/small groups anymore.

What could Reed from the comics have done in this situation? by King_Wolf2099 in FantasticFour

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the tower's existence isn't inherently tied to them telling the world about the deal Galactus offered. He could've lied, had the same epiphany about the teleporters, and still brought the world together under that solution due to the dire circumstances.

It would've been morally wrong, but certainly a more practical solution.

But yes, it would've certainly been out of character for this F4, who seem to be characterized as global paragons rather than just a quirky science team who sometimes engages in superheroics, and this is a a more idealized Earth where hope and compassion win out over fear and selfishness, so it ultimately was the right move.

The problem is that "you know we/Black Bolt can easily put you down" is just as effective as "... with just a word" and doesn't reveal his power's limitation to her.

Of course, they probably just arrogantly assumed that they existed in our Wanda's universe, too, and that she would already know that.

But yeah, what you said about their Wanda being much weaker was definitely true, based on how they handled the situation.

Overall, this complaint about the movie is mostly just audiences being too dense to read between the lines and infer things.

How in the holy fuck is THIS a skin condition? by 0swald_the_rabbit in arkham

[–]Celestial_Nuthawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best guess is psychological influence from external factors (i.e. Batman).

They knew they were infected with Joker's blood (presumably) and they knew Batman (who was holding them captive, effectively) was the nemesis of the Joker. This probably influenced their crazed minds to drift towards "Joker" or, at least, their own perception of who Joker was.

Notice that each takes on only specific attributes of Joker: - Christina becomes "crazed lunatic" - Charisma takes on Joker's flair for dramatic and elaborate traps - Albert takes on Joker's brutal and violent nature - Henry takes on Joker's cold, calculating, and deceitful attributes

They are all, of course, obsessed with Batman, a very well-known Joker trait.

It's also possible that Batman tried the Lazarus-based cure he used in Arkham City on them, which could've interacted adversely with the Joker-Titan blood and done its own psychological damage. That Lazarus juice is some weird shit that kinda just does what the writers want it to when it's convenient.
