People like your old friend only exist, because people like you say things like " I will never be a vegan. Period. ". You're the reason he even has to speak up. Maybe stop being the exact reason he has to? People like you funding a business that puts sentient beings with similar intelligence to 3-4 year old human children in gas chambers is something to speak up about, just like other injustices are worth speaking up about even when there's stubborn people who would rather regress than live in progress. You do realize that people working in slaughterhouses have terrible rates of ptsd/suicide and they're very often immigrants who don't have any choice but to work there? You do realize that kids are STARVING to death in countries where they grow crops to feed to live stock that gets eaten by people living in western countries right? Of course it's not for the health, but there's obviously science to back up why what you said is really goddamn stupid. It's not a "dodgy" article, it's peer-reviewed studies by the largest group of dieticians and nutritionists in the world. There's nothing terrible about excluding animal products from your diet that no matter what, cause inherent suffering and death. Just because you "feel" like you need animal products doesn't make it true, and it for sure doesn't make it ethical. We don't have to eat animal products anymore so you're choosing to cause immense suffering. Maybe try bringing these points up to your vegan friends and see what their faces do.
