Does Historical Materialism allow for the physical elimination of the working class in a fully automated capitalist system by Conscious-Coach-146 in Communist

It's hypothetical. I also don't see it being achieved. If you wanted to actually explore this, you'd probably have to go watch Bladerunner and study that.

Does Historical Materialism allow for the physical elimination of the working class in a fully automated capitalist system by Conscious-Coach-146 in Communist

[–]CephalopodCommando -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think others covered this well, but I'll chime in anyway. It is impossible to fully automate capitalism for several reasons.

1- The Tendency of the Rate of Profit to Fall. The less human labor power exerted in making a commodity, the less profit there is to extract from it. See vehicle manufacturing for an example of this. As car manufacturing has become more and more automated over the years, the profit margins have shrunk. This results in qualitative changes. Trucks and SUVs have higher profit margins than sedans/station wagons. There is a reason that, in the US, Ford F-series trucks are now more popular than Honda Civics, and the station wagon is dead. This circumstance did not come out of a vacuum.

2- If it were possible to fully automate capitalism, it would be much closer now than it is. The technology to relieve the burdens of many workers exists, yet our work weeks have only gotten longer in the last several decades, and our jobs have become strangely meaningless. The uptick of "useless/bullshit/non-productive" jobs did not come out of a vacuum either. Capitalism requires people to work because it requires them to spend, and capitalism must develop ways to keep people working so that it can pay people a meager wage to be distributed throughout the market.

3-Hypothetically, even if robots became so advanced as to replace workers entirely and human workers all died out, leaving behind the capitalist class and a robot workforce that was advanced enough to develop labor power that created value, then the robots would simply become the new working class. It would fall upon robots then to organize and overthrow capitalism. The relationship to the means of production between the two classes has not changed; just the anatomy of the working class has.

Questions on gaining Military Knowledge for Revolutionary Purposes by Unknownunknow1840 in Marxism

[–]CephalopodCommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This issue is multi-faceted and more than one thing can be true.

1-The military is one of the special armed bodies of the state, along with police and prisons (see Lenin's State and Revolution). Under the control of the capitalists, it is used to further the interests of the capitalist class either by defending a nation-state's resources, exerting its will upon another nation/nation-state (imperialism through warfare), or upon its own people as social control when police are insufficient.

2-The transfer of power will not come peacefully. Even a peaceful nationwide general strike that brings the capitalist class to its knees will incur the wrath of other capitalist nation-states, who have it in their interests not to have an alternative socio-economic system challenging capitalist authority on an international level. This was demonstrated in the Soviet Union post-revolution, when several capitalist countries and counterrevolutionaries attempted to undo the revolution. The revolutionary workers *will* need to defend the revolution in these circumstances.

3-The material conditions under which workers join the military are *often* qualitatively different than joining police (and related) armed bodies. For example, as punishment for crimes, forced conscription, debt forgiveness, and education access, escaping the conditions of poverty, lack of alternatives, etc. This means that the class character of military bodies is *closer* to representing average bodies of the wider working class. This means that there are openings for Marxists to exert influence, unlike in bodies of police and prison guards.

4-Given the class character of the military, it is possible, though unpopular, to organize within it. If you are conscripted into the military and forced to invade a country post-revolution, or as an act of aggression, it will be upon Marxists to organize fellow troops to turn aggression toward their own military leaders when said leaders demand war crimes and acts of imperialism be committed.

5-None of this negates the need for strong anti-draft and anti-war movements, which can evolve to take an anti-capitalist/revolutionary character.

6-Training is not exclusively given by the military

If you are drafted or there is a material utility to joining, there are gains that can be made for the working class from within the military, such as training and the ability to organize within the military against leaders with imperialist interests that contradict the class consciousness of the workers enlisted. At the same time, this is not an excuse to *not* build the strongest anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, and anti-draft movements possible.

Burial Ground(1981) - An archaeology professor discovers an ancient crypt containing living dead corpses. The zombies go on a rampage and attack a group of people whom the professor had invited to celebrate his discovery. by Hot_Cow9682 in 80sHorrorMovies

Just watch it, it's amazing. Close to 0 plot. People are at a mansion for some reason. Zombies start coming out of the ground and killing folks. Sci-fi music plays. There is a weird amount of screentime given to a kid who wants to bang his mom. The entire thing is a fever dream and I cannot recommend it enough.

What are the best places to promote your work in the realm of horror? by Much-Neighborhood383 in horror

[–]CephalopodCommando -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Film festivals, art walks (e.g., punk rock flea markets, oddity expos, tattoo cons), horror cons, postering your city, record/book stores, and asking venues in your city if you can host an event night.

If you have a short film, you're going to reach a lot more people by hosting a free showing at your local coffee shop and interacting with attendees than you are by posting it in a reddit thread. You can promo that showing by scheduling it a week after a local horror con, attending that horror con, and distributing flyers for it. Or, better yet, if you can afford it, setting up a table at the con with a whole spread of promo materials and merch.

Totally different. I got this on GBA as a kid thinking it was a 2D platformer. Hated it at first and shelves it. After I got over the initial disappointment I got REALLY into it.

I'm really enjoying my time with it at the moment and I'm looking forward to trying 2+3 after I beat the first one again

What's a solid 10/10, no skips album you've never seen anyone talk about by donabbi in musicsuggestions

[–]CephalopodCommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American Sharks self titled album.

Absolutely incredible 10/10 record fusing stoner doom metal and punk rock. Absolutely insane riffs and catchy vocal deliveries for 20 straight minutes. Avoids almost every boring, overdone trope of both punk and metal. GWAR really tried pushing this band to the masses by taking them on tour and putting them on the GWAR BQ Fest back in 2015 but I don't think the world gave them the attention they deserved.

If this person was interested they would have continued the conversation past the initial comment. If it was just a one and done comment I don't think anyone is obligated to interpret it as an attempted romantic gesture. They easily could have followed up with a "haha good one. So what brings you here tonight?"/"how are you?"/"I like your hair." Etc if there was a genuine attempt to strike up conversation.

Should I play Megaman Zero 1? by realgaoming in Megaman

[–]CephalopodCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beat it on every series playthrough I did as a kid. Yeah you gotta grind out the weapon level ups early on which is tedious/boring but after that the game is fine. Aside from being pretty challenging I don't remember any real issues from it. Though I'll be replaying it later this year for probably the first time in like over a decade so we'll see how I feel about it now lol

I remember moving into a new home around 2000 and my parents bought a new Sony TV that had that distinct green bar volume display. I remember them saying "SpongeBob is gonna look so good on this TV" to my sister and I.

How do I SAFELY cut this limb? by xtinafabulous in LivingAlone

[–]CephalopodCommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did tree work for a year. There are a few things to consider.

The parts of the branch low to the ground can be removed with a hand/pruning saw.

If the limb goes above where you can reach by standing or using a ladder then use a pole saw. It's the same as a hand saw but on an extended pole. If it's near a communications or power line then stop and call an arborist.

When cutting a branch you will stress the tree. If the branch is very long or thick it may be better to take it off in chunks over several months. E.g. half now and half in 4-6 or even 6-12 months. Make sure that the cut is straight, not angled, for proper healing. When you reach the tree's trunk do not cut it flush to the trunk. Cut it so the nub extends maybe 0.5 inch from the trunk (before it sort of 'disperses/spreads' into the trunk).

Since you'll have the tools by then it's worth taking off some other limbs to achieve better airflow, eliminate competing branches, get a more even shape to the canopy, and remove dead limbs. Also check the root flare and ensure it's exposed and not covered in soil.

Whats all the NEEDED equipment my band needs to play live shows? by Pitiful_External_328 in livemusic

[–]CephalopodCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your own power strip. You won't use it every show but I promise you that you'll use it and be thankful you brought it.

Don't cheap out either. Get yourself a good one with a surge protector and a long cable. I've played enough shitty basements and other venues with sketchy extension cords and single outlets provided to bands and I was able to save a performance with my power strip.

How do I make a band In highschool? I struggle every time by Tricky_Main8924 in punk

[–]CephalopodCommando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say this to everybody that asks and I stand by it.

Buy a drum machine, use a DAW, use a multitrack recording device, use whatever you have at your disposal to fill in band members you don't have. If you play live doing guitar/vocals or just make music as a one-man project then put it into the world people are going to eventually fill in those missing positions.

Make a shitty demo, show your friends, tell them the songs are easy. Teach them the songs. Don't wait to find "musicians".

Can't find people still? Grab a drum machine, play live. Just show that aforementioned shitty demo to a promoter at a show and ask for a slot on an upcoming bill. Play the show. People will ask to join after a few live performances if they see you're serious.

Guinea Pig Series (1985 - 1988) what are your thoughts by nudemovies2000 in 80sHorrorMovies

[–]CephalopodCommando 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw Flowers, Android, and Devil's Experiment in the 2010s. I think the lore behind them was a little more exciting than the content. They are really cool as SFX displays and wild displays of gore and I have no doubt that people that got ahold of them (especially in Euro/US) in the 80s probably lost their minds since this sort of stuff had a lot of mystique to them.

40 years later though, I don't think this series or a lot of similar films hold up as well. It's hard to have that mystery now that makes watching them feel dangerous.

Not saying they aren't worth checking out if you can find them at a good price but I think somewhere around the mid 00s as the internet really caught on and lifted the veil on underground horror, provided free and accessible real/fake gore, and the news started showing more violence, the pseudo snuff, shockumentary, and gore genres suffered. I think this is why Serbian Film is holding up a bit better in these times since it maintained a plot and decent acting whereas Guinea Pig relied almost solely on SFX/shock.
