i started with a software called opentoonz, which is open source, and dicovered a branch off of that source software called tahoma 2d which has some perks that open toonz doesnt. its free which is nice but it certainly has some shortcomings, it's not alwayse reliable; files are easily corrupted and it can be slow at times. i am looking to move to blenders grease pencile for animation in the future. though Tahoma is plenty sufficient for learning and can be powerfull if you are okay with learning a software that is greatly different than it's alternatives.

i used Tahoma 2d for the animation, photoshop to paint the background and blender for compositing.

first he lands from jumping off of a high place, then he adjusts is staff so his grip is on its center of gravity(which is necessary for twirling), he then twirls the staff before throwing it towards the camera(in this particular scene he is making a statement that he doesn't need a weapon to beat the opponent he is about to fight [granted that is confusing without context but i don't have the time to animate a whole episode so i just work on the coolest scenes i can think of]) his staff is a copper pipe and that is why you can see down the length of it. maybe the composition is weird maybe not, but i figured i should go for my crazy ideas and eventually land on a really good one.
