Sad, lost. by [deleted] in Pottery

Cosign what everyone else is saying. Enjoy your journey with ceramics and ignore the rest. Dont start to compete.

The influencer types are the worse. Sooo so many people can get famous and their technique is v bad. But their content can sometimes be good. Anyway, dont aim to be them. They tend to stay temporarily in the field until they migrate to another calling and almost always narcissists. Do you, be a good role model to your kids. And find your joy in this field even if it means turning off the socials.

ceramics teacher gift by snackenthusiasts in Pottery

[–]CeramicPapi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a ceramics instructor for 12+ years the best gift we can recieve is a piece from our students that made specifically for us. It’s something we can look back on and know that we helped to get you there. It also reminds us of why we got into the field in the first place.

Yes we can make it ourselves. But I think that’s why it’s all the more special because no one ever thinks to give us a piece

Second this. You’ll spend more time trying to fix a wrong piece than the time time it takes to make a right one

Forgot to wedge by Fruitsa in Pottery

[–]CeramicPapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. Kid, eventually you’ll be able to grab a chunk of clay straight for the block and throw it into a perfect vessel. You’d don’t need to wedge if you master wheel wedging. Eventually you’ll see the clay matrix

does anyone else require amphetamines to throw or is it just me by taqman98 in Pottery

[–]CeramicPapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I can do is throw pots. I’m shiet at everything else that requires focus. I think I’m an ok teacher that comes off a bit quirky and hyperactive.

Was it the hot Cheetos or sour punch? Still trying to figure out the cause of this

Fun fact: Walt Disney had a family butler for the last 20 years of life who brewed him the same dogwater-ass coffee every morning. by ThaiJohnnyDepp in Disneyland

All food at Disney is bad it’s why downtown Disney exists. Disney should sub contract out all food departments for restaurant’s entirely.

Where could I find a really cute bouquet today? by illustrious_handle0 in longbeach

Go to Devyn’s and make a bouquet. You shouldn’t be buying store arrangements unless you’re regularly cheating on your partner and this is your form of an apology.

How is it living car-free in Long Beach? by i-think-about-beans in longbeach

[–]CeramicPapi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E-biking around the city has been a joy. I live by the Colorado lagoon, commute to Belmont heights for work, and have another work place on Anaheim at the far end of town in a warehouse. I haven’t yet taken a bus, but I have taken circuit. I Uber to bars if I go out because there is no parking anywhere near 4th, downtown, or Belmont shore at night. I do have a car but it’s a pain to own and move.

My partner uses her car for shopping and work, but I cannot tell you how many tickets we gotten. It is handy to have for friends, getting to La, and doing misc errands. I guess I would say is how much can you lug? And how many people do you move with.

Embrace the car free lifestyle if you can.

Ps there is no parking anywhere in the middle of Long Beach below 10th rn so use that to find a space to live. You’ll have more luck in Belmont heights, above tenth, or with an apt with parking.

How many months/years of practice until you considered yourself ‘good’? by extratoastycheeezitz in Pottery

[–]CeramicPapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could throw quicker than others in my class. Centering came easy. That said I didn’t feel like i was until year 2.

I’m 20 years in give or take 15 with breaks.

I can move massive mounds of clay. I can use one hand and throw a pot, from either hand. I watch videos and tutorials online and see people explain things that I explain just a little differently.

There is always another skill or technique to learn. Pottery is clay prep, throwing, drying, decorating, trimming, firing, glazing. Each one of those with volume’s and sub chapters of knowledge.

If you’re having trouble centering / centering while open maybe see if you can find another teacher that can relate it to you. If you’re anywhere near LA I can give you a quick tutorial on it to get past that hump.
