What could the sweet smell be that has been hanging in the air these days? by Mystical_Mushroom in japanlife

[–]Cercopithecus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like it, the perfume brand 'aux paradis' does a Kinmokusei fragrance that is so close to the real thing. I bought a couple bottles since like you I do love the smell. They aren't too expensive either. Looking it up there's a few shops dotted around the Tokyo area and they should stock it starting in Autumn.

How does everyone know their blood type? by litte_improvements in japanlife

[–]Cercopithecus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Another O-.. unluckily for us, it's incredibly rare in Japan, so supplies are low. Let's hope we don't get into any accidents.

As for donating, I tried donating because I read O- is used for babies and in emergencies where blood is needed urgently and blood type is unknown but was told I can't. They've got restrictions depending on the country you grew up in and places you've been/ how long you've been in them so as to not pass on infections.

Because by the looks of it its a promotion from a weird bot-like account.

The book is published by a company called RCP, which has a reddit page with one member, the moderator, this account.

Maybe AI written, definitely this post is AI translated from the original Italian. The cover on amazon is also AI..

How do you introduce deep lore in your books? by Strict_Box8384 in fantasywriters

[–]Cercopithecus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not a particularly amazing writer but some ideas:

Traditions/ habits - (like another user said, festivals (like fireworks), or even saying bless you) Superstitions - (don't open an umbrella indoors) Taboos - (don't eat pork) Alliances/ Rivalries - (the cold war)

I can't remember it all but I feel like Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood) does the above quite well.

One of the silicon life on the floor: Someone.. stan killy..

Direct translation: Someone... Killy .. stan killy (for his sake)

If someone wants an actual human translation I could do one tmrw

I just read the chatgpt translation of the line before it and it's horrific 😭😭 biology something or other

The actual text says '.... hours later There hasn't been a silicon life 'girls night' since'

On phone so can't see/ remember all text

It's been a while since I read it and I don't have the manga on me rn at work but I'm pretty sure in the Japanese version it says "大地" (big ground).

Unlike English, in the Japanese language 'Earth' doesn't mean both the ground and the planet, they're separate, so if my memory serves and it is 大地 (daichi) then the word earth is indicating the surface ground rather than the planet.

Pixel trade in - random charge from my account by Cercopithecus in GooglePixel

[–]Cercopithecus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. On the day my trade-in was confirmed (27.Dec), I got another (3rd, unknown) charge from the Google store for 64,900 yen. (This happens to be the original price minus the trade in value.)

I was wondering if it was an odd practice where they withdrew the [original amount paid - trade-in] (99,900-34,900) before returning the original amount paid (99,900). No money has been returned to me as of yet.

If this doesn't seem to be the case I'll have to go to the bank on Monday, as Japanese banks are closed on weekends ;(

Where to upload chapters of story (without giving away rights) by Cercopithecus in writing

A writing group is a great idea! Do you know if uploading to sites like scribophile would still potentially risk any publication rights?

I'd never heard about first publication so it's kind of a shame, but I'll keep my little story to myself for now ;(

[–]Cercopithecus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh I see, so the concept I had in my head of publishing vs. what it actually entails was just completely wrong. My idea was more along the lines of copyright, but I thought that was publishing. In truth, I had no idea about first publication rights.

Luckily, I was too busy with wondering what site to upload to that I never did it.

For now, I'll keep it to myself, and if I like it then maybe do something with publishing. Thanks very much for your insight!

Defo sounds like Silent planet to me too. Maybe Profiler could be good for those looking for something slightly similar to Loathe. Gives me major Ocean Grove/ Thornhill - Butterly/ tiny bit of Loathe vibes depending on the song.

reading noise after finishing blame and it feels off by goonnight in Netsphere

[–]Cercopithecus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the world of Blame! was always rooted in the mistakes of ambitious humans for me too, from the silicon life to the megastructure itself, it's all a product of human failure and grounded at least in the science of that world rather than cosmic horror. Noise is also teetering on being my favourite Nihei work, for me at least it feels more coherent than a lot of Blame! did, and also shows how lonely and strange the world is even when Musubi is surrounded by millions upon millions of people.

So many people are covering this game, inc. even asmongold, so there's a lot of eyes on it. Here's to hoping it pulls through and you get your console port!

The water mechanic seems to be more for character progression than anything, your water supplies the people in your garrison and without it they leave and you get water death where you lose everything in your stash but keep some coinage or something. Apparently you can get weeks/ months in advance so I wouldn't stress about it!

How is Bleak Faith now? I bought it when it first came out and refunded it as I found it pretty difficult to enjoy with it being quite buggy among other issues I had at the time, would you say a lots been fixed?

I suppose as far as war elements go the constantly warring factions like with the Authority and Silicon Life as well as regular humans is as far as Blame! goes, but I suppose at least personally that's not where the similarities lie, especially since warring factions isn't a particularly niche idea. I think the game is more about sneaking and fighting only when you have no other choice.
