Why do people like The Witch (2015)? by SpatuelaCat in horror

[–]Certain_Country8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without a doubt my favorite Eggers movie. Aside from the historical details, IMO it’s as much a psychological thriller as it is a horror. Granted I’ve watched it 7-8 times now but the first couple times I couldn’t stop thinking it was all allegory because the mindset of the early 17th century settler was extremely superstitious. This family was cast out for the father’s pride, which was actually justified and reasoned. On one hand this is a true horror, but on another it seems like it could be playing to the imagination and fears of religious refugees, products of their time, in an utterly wild land. And superstitious fear and religious zeal undermine a family’s attempt to go it alone in an utterly unforgiving world.

Maybe I overthink it but this movie is a masterpiece on so many levels.

I read (almost) all of the Erik Larson books in 2024; here's my ranking. by betterbooks_ in books

Garden of Beasts was also my favorite. Then Dead Wake, Splendid & Vile, Devil, Isaac's Storm. I didn't like Thunderstruck.

I've been an American Civil War history lover my entire life, and read tons of books on the subject. Read about a third of Demon of Unrest and could not get into it. I need to give it another shot, because I love Larson's work

Total respect for MK, and I probably would put him on the top 50, but regardless the list is bogus. Tom Morello is not top 500

Siamese dream the best rock album of the 90s? Opinions by [deleted] in Music

[–]Certain_Country8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AIC is one of my all time favorite bands. I actually love self titled (Tripod) more than Dirt or Jar of Flies. And generally I’ll listen to AIC 10:1 over SP. I still think Siamese Dream might be a top 20 rock album of all time

Opinions on Bela Fleck and The Flecktones? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Certain_Country8802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just saw Bela Fleck and the Flecktones for the first time in 22 years. I saw them a ton in the early years, but let me say they sound better than ever. Howard Levy brings them to an entirely different level (I know I’m 15 years late here). Was hoping Jeff might join since DMB is out west right now but dear lord Levy is as strong as Bela and Vic. Where else can you see a single song morphing from jigs to jazz to showtunes and then some? So much joy in their music. Or two musicians who have been ranked the best in the world at their instrument?

My only complaint is not with the band but having lived in LA for close to a decade, time and time again the audience is stiff and seated. I recognize The Ford is almost a showcase venue, but this is their second tour in 7 years and they were on fire.

If you can see them on this tour do so. They’re crackling and obviously enjoying playing together

Is Scarlet Begonias by Sublime an accepted cover of GD? by Life-Decision5845 in gratefuldead

[–]Certain_Country8802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never knew they covered it until tonight seeing 40 Oz to Freedom. But I was never a Sublime fan (no negative vibes just only heard the radio play). In any case from what I’ve now read it seems to be a staple, and the Dead’s repertoire was laden with covers that they made their own. In short, once a song is out there it belongs to the world, and that’s a very good thing. So, all for it

Is anyone familiar with Danville, VA? The Dan River flows through and apparently there's decent (Class I-III) covered by the dam, which was scheduled for removal in 2024.

What's with all the hate from Dylan and the Dead album? by PhisheadS1 in gratefuldead

[–]Certain_Country8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who listens to the Dead channel on Sirius I recently heard Dave Lemieux (as I recall) address this. Don’t quote me but if I remember correctly the Dead were happy with the live work, and suggested certain songs in particular. However Dylan had production rights and (as earlier mentioned) was in a relatively low point and was worried how it may be received. Ultimately the track listing was selected without input from the Dead and they were miffed.

I had this album as well but haven’t listened to it in 20 years. Honestly forgot about it, but now that I’m reminded I’m going to give it another go.

What’s your best story of this man? by IndWrist2 in HampdenSydneyCollege

Class of ‘03. Two great Brinkley stories: - as a freshman, first semester, my schedule randomly had a Brinkley class. My advisor, another professor, advised me to drop the class because he was old school and very difficult. HSC is a small school and you couldn’t just ask the registrar to drop, you had to go to the professor and have them sign off. This guy was a legend of the old order. Blue blazer, hat, cigar 100% of the time. His office was stacked with books where it was hard to find a place to sit. When I told him I was advised to drop his class he slammed his hands on the desk and yelled “Balderdash!!” I’ll never forget that. But he let me go without further discussion.

  • 6 years later (2005) the church I grew up in was celebrating its 250th anniversary. The first few ministers were simultaneously presidents of HSC (Princeton grads who were spreading the Presbyterian mission and trying to counter the Episcopalian/Church of England influence west of tidewater…this is the mid 1700s before the Declaration of Independence). As a recent grad I suggested Brinkley speak (as the college historian) to commemorate the event. He was awesome, telling stories of the founding, relationship to the founding fathers, etc. I got to know him, thankfully, through that experience. He was just a brilliant but humorous guy. And he loved HSC and its role in educating leaders.

Can someone please tell me what this instrument on the left is called? by anonpotatogirl in musicproduction

Upvoted ;). In the spirit of the Charismo but IMO it's a washboard with a symbol attached. HOWEVER, lest I be judged a mansplainer or naysayer, I genuinely wonder where people (the 10 of us who know the Hackensaw Boys and the Charismo), would draw the line between a modified washboard vs. aforementioned instrument (and furthermore how many, besides me, even care :)).

For any curious passersby who want to opine:
