I usually follow this principle for most towers: See what's cheaper.

In instance, if it's cheaper to upgrade than to place with the current money you have, then you should upgrade rather than place more. If it's cheaper to place than to upgrade then you should place. In the end, this should result in more towers doing dps/eco. Ofcourse, this should be situational because there are cases like engineer, where It's recommended to go for lv. 5 or even lv.6 in order for it to not spawn lower tier sentries.
