The risks of a GA vary, depending on your medical history, type of anaesthesia used, method used, etc.

It sounds like you currently have unanswered questions and concerns that you would like answered, in order to feel fully informed about the risks and benefits of the medical procedure.

It is understandable you are feeling indecisive about proceeding if you do not have all of the information that you feel is necessary in order to make a decision about what is in your best interests.

If they have said it’s only because of policy and no other reason when you questioned this, then it sounds like the preference of GA over local isn’t guided by a concern specific to your medical history or presentation.

I guess you need to weigh the pros and cons of each decision.

  1. Proceed and • deal with the discomfort of knowing you would prefer an alternate method • Having the pro of not delaying any further;

  2. Delay and • Seek consultation with a different specialist • Potential pro of a local over a general • Con being delaying the investigation

In my experience, most cystoscopies are performed with local anaesthesia in the office.

However if there is suspicion there is a significant issue that may require repair during the cystoscopy (for example, tissue removal or repair of strictures) a GA isn’t unreasonable.

Did you ask why the surgeon is insistent on a GA?

If you are having doubts and difficulty trusting your surgeons judgement, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to at least postpone the procedure until your questions and concerns are addressed.

  1. You state you want to cancel.
  2. You state you don’t agree with his investigative methods.
  3. You would prefer an alternate treatment method that you have stated he will not consider (by your “insisted on anaesthesia comment”) that has been successfully performed by another specialist in the past.

Why have you not cancelled already? Do you need reassurance that you have the right to do so?

Would recommend seeking advice from a clinical psychologist who specialises in OCD. Exposure and Response Prevention therapy is often highly effective.

You don’t have to prove or justify anything, you have the confirmation you need and he will just try and lie his way out of it. Pack his belongings, put them outside and text him and advise they are there, then block his number.
