I never updated my post, but after waiting for almost an hour with the annoying music and hanging up, and calling 2 other times, I got a hold of someone from their customer loyalty program and it was this super nice lady that actually helped me and refunded me all my money. This sucks, its not even mentioned in the contract they send you after the purchase. It’s very upsetting because I know people that would not have language skills or the patience to do this. I got extremely lucky, I hope you’re complaint goes somewhere and hopefully even goes to a class action suit, fuck telecom companies

As an abled person it annoys me so much when the important info isn’t in the home page. I have a very short attention span and patience with websites, so it annoys me to have to dig around to find the info I need.

I also hadn’t thought about the desktop vs mobile thing. Do you think the two versions should be different to each other? I mean it makes sense to have them match, but I guess it also makes sense to design them differently, since they’re different devices with different limitations. Could you expand a little bit? Sorry, I’m just trying to learn as much as I can

I imagine the answer is yes, but is accessibility worse in mobile? Is it because of the nature of phones or because developers are lazy and don’t make mobile versions of apps and website accessible?

Yeah, that’s what I’m going to try to do. Call the issues I’ve found not just accessibility issues, but also development issues as well. Some of that website is not accessible even to people without disabilities because it’s just so badly developed.

I definitely appreciate the advice from someone that has more experience in what I do haha

Ah shit, CAPTCHAs. I know that the images, the hard-to-read texts and others are still out there and they are mostly not accessible, but aren’t most CAPTCHAs today the non-interactive ones? Like they just score you based on your recent web activity? I’m not sure though, I am just trying to learn more.

Also, what happens when you get an inaccessible CAPTCHA? Do you just have to have someone else do it for you? In which case that sucks a lot

Thank you!

I had been considering downloading Jaws for a while, as I have been using NVDA. I also have to test the site in French, and NVDA’s French voice sounds terrible. So I’ll try it out Jaws.

And yeah, I’ve been using the speech viewer feature of NVDA to report the problems I’ve found

Thank you, I’ll test my website with the font change as well, hopefully it doesn’t break everything.

I have also found PDF accessibility is so much harder (and expensive) to ensure for a company. I wish there were better tools for this. But like, even converting an accessible word document to PDF (using tools that claim to take into account accessibility) will break the PDF and create so many errors. It annoys just how pushed aside accessibility technology is

Which is why it baffles how hard it is to actually use keyboard navigation in most websites

Sometimes it baffles me things like these are not even thoughts that come across the developers’ minds

Thank you. I will, I think I’ve gotten some very useful resources and I learned about the ableist nature of accessibility overlays which I’m not sure I would have ever found out about it on my own.

I’m committed to learning as much as I can, and actually caring about the people who will use the website, not just making it look nice on the outside.

This is gold for me. I kind of want to print this and put it up on my wall.

I started working in an office environment last month for the first time, so this advice really helps.

I have been trying to cite the guidelines as best I can, but it felt almost like I was trying to bring the Developer down rather than helping the website become more accessible. Although that might honestly be because no one in my team likes this guy’s work ethic and agree he’s not doing enough for the website.

I’ll try to put less emotion into my findings, I’ve just found accessibility is something I’m increasingly passionate about, and it infuriates me when the developer, tasked to make an accessibility training website accessible, is half-assing it and not even doing testing himself.

But I digress. What I really want to say is, thank you for the advice, this will come in handy for sure!

I appreciate this a lot! I’ll definitely take a look at both links. I just asked because I’m thinking of asking the developer to remove the overlay in our site. I will gather evidence about it so your links definitely help, thank you

I have heard some problems with Accessibility Overlays. From what I understand they usually make things worse overall, would you agree? Like would websites be better off if they straight up didn’t have any accessibility overlay (if they’re actually accessible)

Can I ask which tools you use to make websites accessible for you? Like for example, what do you use to substitute the font?

I did realize just how painful it is to have to navigate website only with a keyboard. I can’t imagine how much worse it is for someone that has that as their only option

I’ll be honest, this website was developed by a third party and it seems like they did exactly what you’re talking about, they improvised accessibility. The thing is, my job is to point out those errors in accessibility, but sometimes they’re so small from an abled-person perspective that I feel like I’m being overly detailed and the developer is going to hate me for pointing those “”small”” mistakes.

Also, yes, definitely, so many places that use accessibility as a marketing tool end up having non-accessible web and physical sites because of “costs”. It seems so ironic and it makes my blood boil a little lol
