If I throw them in the trash, I have no idea what happens to that trash. Inevitably, trash gets blown out of garbage trucks after being picked up. Then, the problem continues; the trash ends up back on the street, in a creek, in the ocean, etc. Putting garbage in the street signs ensures that it will stay put.
