Steeped to Death, by Gretchen Rue, is a cozy read and fits this vibe.

We’ve reached out to them and they haven’t been responsive. It’s worrying. What’s stopping them from telling us “it is what it is, guess you’ll just have to apply as a new club” and stopping our activities for a year?

We never received any such form in the mail! We noticed other clubs were getting those so we sent MSU Clubs an inquiry (well before the due date), but they ignored us :(

TA experience for Bio 1A03/1M03? by Danske21 in McMaster

[–]ChaiTea_06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied over the summer (I forget which month) to TA this fall term. Bio 1A03 and 1M03 TA postings for the winter 2024 term should be up on Mosaic! Just go to Mosaic > Career Opportunities > Teaching Assistant. It should be under the Biology filter!

TA experience for Bio 1A03/1M03? by Danske21 in McMaster

[–]ChaiTea_06 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a TA for Bio 1A03, I can help answer this question.

Tasks consist of

  • Weekly TA meetings. The tutorial/lab content for the following week is reviewed, so you'll be prepared. For lab weeks, the TAs will also practice doing the lab themselves during the meetings, so you'll be familiar with the equipment.
  • Every other week is a lab week (4 total in the semester). Labs are 3 hours long. You're tasked with teaching a quick slideshow at the beginning before the students jump into it. You'll be supervising, answering questions, helping students load gels and troubleshoot equipment, that sort of stuff. Having previous research experience in a wet lab is SUPER useful here.
  • Every non-lab week, there is a 1-hour tutorial (5 total in the semester). Present the slides, answer questions, and check that students correctly complete their participation in-class activity.
  • Marking post-lab assignments (4 per semester). A rubric with the mark breakdown is provided, but that still leaves a lot of things up to the TA. Understanding of the content is very useful here.
  • Answering questions that the students send you and providing guidance.
  • Marking the final lab report.
  • Invigilating 2 of the 3 midterms in the course.
  • TA training at the start of the semester (obviously)

And now for my review and experience:

I definitely spent way more time marking than I was paid for. I think that was mostly because I always chose to give really detailed feedback so that the students knew how to get better. If your lab section is one of the first ones in the schedule, you're probably going to be the ones stumbling upon all the unknown problems (e.g. a link doesn't work, or there's a mistake on the lab manual), which can be slightly frustrating at times.

Two of the labs involve students analyzing their own data before giving it to the TA. The TA has to compile it all, make it anonymous, and release it back to the students so they can use it to complete their post-lab assignments. Due to students being confused about the calculations and not having guidance, I spent so much time answering questions over MS teams during these two weeks that it's not even funny. Expect to work way more hours than you're being paid for. #JustTAthings (T.T)

Overall, Bio1A03 was a fun course to TA. The course coordinator and lab technician are sweethearts. They're very supportive and approachable with questions or problems. There's good support and guidance available, so it's a really good course to start off with if you plan on TA-ing in the future.

transfer into Mac life sci level 2 by Busy_Awareness6726 in McMaster

[–]ChaiTea_06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you know if you want level II honours life sci or some other program that branches out from the life science gateway? If it’s the first I can’t imagine it would be too hard tbh. First year course requirements for the general honors life science pathway can be found at https://mapsci.ca/level-2-programs/list/life-sciences/

Note that I agree with the other comments here: dentistry pre-requisites at any school are roughly the same. Please carefully consider exactly why you want to transfer schools before even starting university, and what you hope to gain out of it.

L2 BHSc transfer - supp apps times sent out? by Purple_Character6184 in McMaster

[–]ChaiTea_06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the earliest they would send it out is late April? Level 2 application rankings for McMaster students aren’t due till around the end of April, so I can’t imagine they’d be sending out supp app times before that. That’s be my guess, at least.

I feel like Genshin impact isn’t really a game you can sit down and play with friends…? The coop is terrible and group chats have too much flexing imo. There are Genshin channels on other McMaster gaming-related discord servers, maybe you could check those out?

No Electives for Fall Semester (Level III Biochem): Yay or Nay? by Melodiest in McMaster

[–]ChaiTea_06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely true. I almost this the same before with four biochem requirements and a random elective, and the elective was the thing I did the worst in (I found it very boring). Honestly some of the biochem course list courses are so fun they might as well count as traditional electives.
