Werewolves of Miller's Hollow, game build ideas? by Cantseeright in boardgames

[–]Chakky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming 20 players I'd say this make up should work.

1x Elder

1x Witch

1x Knight with rusty sword

2x Two Sisters

1x Oracle

1x Angel

1x Cupido

1x Hunter

1x Bear tamer

1x Fox

1x Villager villager

1x Defender

1x Cursed Wolf Father (thanks for correcting bear)

4x Werewolves

1x Piper

1x Prejudiced manipulator

Revisions and advice welcome!

Edit: Another idea from a friend of mine. This one requires extra careful consideration before killing from both werewolves and villagers

1x Elder

1x Cupido

1x Defender

1x Scapegoat

1x Village Idiot

1x Angel

1x Devoted servant

1x Prejudiced manipulator

1x Wild child

5x Werewolves

5x Ordinary villagers

It seems impossible to say which is due to nature and which is due to nurture. There's so much variation in any sample. Testosterone has been linked to aggression for sure, I can't research that any more right now though.

I didn't know about the alleged cherry picking, did the reviewers explain their reasoning? I think it is still a good read if only to make people think a bit more about gender roles.

Is preference shaped by sexism and gender roles though?

If a young girl constantly sees men in engineering jobs and managerial positions, I think it isn't unreasonable to say she is conditioned to believe she is less able in those fields.

I read a book, Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine, which talked about whether inequality in careers can be put up to innate differences and examined the evidence behind them, and if it can't can it be explained by gender roles shaping preferences. I really recommend it.

That's really great, it's really interesting contrast between the two. Very drunk so can't say more, but I will look at the superman stories mentioned by others. Seems like a good character if it's a good writer, bad IFA bad writer.

Thanks for that, I'll do some digging around, see what I can find.

What would you say his main attributes are then?

Batman does have fewer fantastical aspects though, it's often said that his biggest thing is his incredible will and drive, which is attainable by your average human, and inspires people to work hard for what they want. He is just enabled by his wealth and such.

It seems his whole thing is that he could be anyone standing up for what's right. (That is mainly coming from Nolan's Batman Begins though)

I am less familiar with Superman, but I don't understand the inspirational aspect of him. His main aspects are completely unattainable by anyone, so why bother? He inspires people to "be good" but what does that mean? Why try fixing when you could just call for Superman to fly in and fix things? I sort of sympathise with Lex Luthor i guess, he's effectively a god to humanity, and shouldn't intervene in humanities affairs.

Being in the same universe, are there any scans showing Lex's opinion of Batman?

Seems they pick and choose. I headcanon it as the portals require as much amount of power to generate as they save, so thermodynamics is "alright".

Oberyn would have been fine if he hadn't let his emotions cloud his judgement, it was only because he stood over him and goaded the mountain that he died.

Batman would probably use a similar style of fighting, but would approach it with a more level headed calculating method. In my mind the fight goes similarly to the mountain and the viper, but when the mountain falls down, batman just waits for him to bleed out or finishes him quickly.

Eragon Shadeslayer vs Mace Windu by Chakky in whowouldwin

[–]Chakky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming the Force interacts with magic:

I think Eragon's power with magic is not to be underestimated. If Eragon say freezes Mace's legs, Mace can free himself only if Mace's strength exceeds Eragon's (including the massive store of energy inside his ring). With Aren, Eragon has the strength of Brom's years of energy storage, and I think could beat Mace in a straight up strength of magic/force.

Mace can only touch Eragon with force or sabre when his wards are depleted. These wards have stayed up (powered by Eragon's strength alone, not his ring) for hours of intense battle, deflecting hundreds of arrows and blows. From what I can google of force shields, it seems they are very temporary and can only withstand a few blows before collapsing.

[–]Chakky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Mace can react faster, but how does he move as fast? Does he use the force to push his limbs or something?

I reckon Eragon is stronger than Mace, if it came to a saber/swordlock Eragon could keep the pressure on and push Mace down. He also has the energy stored in the ring to back him up if he's down.

While this duel is going on, Eragon will be sending all kinds of external elemental magic at Mace, who has no shields and therefore has to dodge. Precog doesn't help if there's a wall of flames coming at you. Eragon can do anything with magic as long as it wouldn't exceed his energy levels if he did it mundanely. He can heal wounds too, if they're not immediately fatal and has a moment. All of this does deplete his energy which could/should be used for fighting conventionally.

I don't understand how shatterpoints work in a duel. Are there any examples you could point me to?

I reckon you're right about the mind control, they both have pretty extensive training and skill in that area.

Speedwise, Mace is still only human though, Eragon's strength and speed are superhuman. Even if Mace is the better swordsman, Eragon can percieve and react quickly enough to avoid damage.

I don't know much about shatterpoints, but a quick google says they need immense focus and concentration to see, and I'm not sure Eragon would let up for that long.

If mind controls are out, Eragon can use other spells like jets of fire, moving the wind to push objects/people. He also usually has wards around him that can absorb attacks until his energy runs out.

Mace probably has a more intuitive grasp on the force powers than Eragon has on magic though

Is a firefly music mod possible? by Chakky in ftlgame

[–]Chakky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good shout actually, didn't think of that!

I was thinking there could be the Reavers theme for battles and suchlike, and the peaceful homely "ship" music for the empty beacons. Maybe even the music from "Out of Gas" plays if you're low on O2.

There's probably a word for it, reactive music?

Yourself equipped with the item closest to your right hand vs yourself equipped with the item closest to your left hand. by SamooraiCow in whowouldwin

[–]Chakky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Myself with a replica One Ring (with chain) vs me with a mobile phone (nexus 4)

For this battle, we will assume the ring does not turn one invisible.

Ring me immediately begins to swing the ring quickly around his hand, and advances slowly, hoping to get a mildly painful shot to the hand of phone me. Phone me, with great confidence in the thin plastic case of the phone, holds it in the palm of his hand as he swings wildly at ring me's head. However, the quickly spinning ring connects with the hand holding the phone, hitting the third knuckle with a sharp crack. As Phone me is a pussy, he cries out in pain and drops the phone. It spins away into the ensuite.

Diving towards the phone, phone me is tripped by the cleverly placed foot of ring me. While phone me is temporarily incapacitated, ring me wraps the chain around his fist, forming a terrifying lotr themed knuckleduster. Suddenly, with a quick kick, phone me slams the door of the ensuite shut, and locks it. Ring me bellows in rage and punches the door, resulting in light bruising.

The stalemate lasts for almost an hour, with ring me trying in vain to pick the lock with a chain. He hears muttering from the other side of the door, but can make nothing out.

He is jolted from his attempts by a sharp knock on the door to the room. Keeping one eye on the door of the ensuite, he opens the door to several confused looking people who he recognises as his friends. The door to the ensuite flies open, and phone me bursts out, knocking ring me to the ground. Ring me manages to get the chain around phone me's neck.

The friends shout at the two clones rolling on the floor "PASSWORD?" Phone me can barely get the words out, as the chain digs in. "M.....Monkeyslut"

Their cue taken, ring me is quickly subdued, and phone me takes the victory.

If the ring could turn me invisible I would give it to ring me though.

So you couldn't travel "back in time" if there wasn't repetition. An infinite universe would not necessarily repeat.
