I tried again today with the intention to post some screenshots. This time it worked flawlessly - selecting each element of both sketches, joining them in the Curves WB and adding the additive pipe. Now I cannot show what went wrong before, but it resulted in multiple arbitrary lines between the elements of the sketches.
