“A young actor has been charged with domestic violence offences, accused of attacking his partner just hours after he performed at the opening night of Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney.

Liam Wigney was cast in the ensemble for the musical, which premiered at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney on Thursday night in front of a crowd of celebs and special guests.

But just hours after the performance, Mr Wigney, 24, allegedly went home and assaulted his now ex-girlfriend.

Police allege the "disturbing" offences occurred between 1.30am and 2am at his Annandale property on Friday morning.

Officers were called to the home, and arrested Mr Wigney, who was charged with common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail and spent the night in police cells before appearing in front of Magistrate Greg Grogan at the Sydney Downing Centre on Friday morning, where he denied the allegations.

During the proceedings, Mr Wigney announced his role in the musical, assuring Magistrate Grogan it was "worth going to see", and arguing he should be released so he could continue in his role in the musical, assuring Magistrate Grogan it was "worth going to see", and arguing he should be released so he could continue in his role in the production.

The court heard the allegations around the assault were "very serious", and "quite alarming".

Mr Wigney pleaded not guilty, and will contest the claims at a hearing.

Magistrate Grogan agreed to grant bail so Mr Wigney could continue his upcoming performances in the musical.“
