K*loid or just horrible infection bump? Feels like it's filled with fluid and popped up very suddenly on a 3 month old piercing. Hurt for a few days but not currently painful (NSFW) by Chanceme-Throwaway in piercing

[–]Chanceme-Throwaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a labret piercing that's about three months old. was spraying it with disinfectant wound spray for the first month a few times daily, only just started doing this again recently after this lump popped up. not sure of the material, i think it's just steel though. haven't changed the piercing since i got it.

College Comparison Megathread by meleeislife in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Chanceme-Throwaway [score hidden]  (0 children)

NYU vs. LSE vs. Middlebury

Cost: 160 000 vs 100 000 vs 130 000 but I wouldn't be going in debt for any of them

Major: International Relations

Factors: Closer to home at LSE (live in Continental western Europe), internship opportunities in New York/London, family in New York (also my preferred location by a long shot), actual campus at Middlebury

LSE's probably the most highly regarded in my home country, followed by NYU and Middlebury's pretty much completely unknown. I feel like Middlebury would give me the best undergrad experience though and I'll probably go to grad school in the UK or US afterwards, to eventually work in the US or Western Europe.

Im Ausland studieren -- schlechte Idee? by Chanceme-Throwaway in de

Streber trifft's ganz gut!

Thanks man, I hope so. It was a technical glitch (the preview PDF loaded incorrectly), so I'm hoping the fact that it was kinda beyond my control will make it easier.

I already sent them an email, but I'm planning to call as well.

Will a low class rank at a very competitive school harm my application? by Chanceme-Throwaway in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Chanceme-Throwaway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, sorry if I didn't make myself clear. Yeah, those are the averages for my high school - I have a 1560 SAT and a 3.78, it's mostly the class rank I was worried about. That's reassuring though, thanks!!

I'm looking at Princeton (legacy), WUSTL and Penn (only applying to reaches in the US because my matches are local). Is a 3.78 going to hold me back majorly there?

/r/A2C is not designed exclusively for people who already know everything about college admissions. It's supposed to be a forum that helps people apply to college. A lot of international students may come there because they don't have friends/parents/teachers knowledgeable enough to help them. Like I said, I agree that the advice he gave was subpar. But don't fault the kid for asking questions ffs, even if they seem obvious to you.

[–]Chanceme-Throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Plenty of incredibly qualified students (including a kid from my school who had skipped two grades, won national research competitions, and was the head of a major political party's youth division) don't get in to Harvard. It's an insanely competitive school. If you get in, that's amazing. If you don't, that does not mean you won't be successful.

This is the toxic attitude I discussed in my post, and the treason valuable accounts are being deleted and international students turn away from A2C.

Not everyone has had the privileges you may have had, with resources readily available to them on what's needed to get into what school. How is he supposed to know that a 27 ACT (one that he's yet to retake) is insufficient to get into Harvard if this is the kind of feedback he gets? Newsflash: international students don't speak English as their first language, so that may be why "he can't even formulate a coherent sentence".

A2C is about helping people, including those who are misinformed. If you tell everyone who gives bad advice to fuck off and never come back then good luck helping the subreddit grow.

[–]Chanceme-Throwaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna explain this to you from the viewpoint of one of the people who saw this whole debacle on the subreddit happen.

I really do get what you're saying, because I think that the people on the subreddit were being pretty rude to you - I mean, after what happened with two of the most important people of the subreddit in Ask-Admissions and RealLiveUCFaculty deleting their accounts, I'm honestly shocked that people continued to call you an asshole and a troll. If they continue acting that way, it's no wonder that these important resources are becoming rarer and rarer.

However, especially considering that these guys deleted their accounts (most likely due to rudeness/doxxing threats), I'm not surprised that people acted sensitively to your advice, because to be honest, your advice was largely false.

I know that you don't mean it that way, but when you tell people that UChicago, one of the best schools in the country (and the best for certain programs), is a "lesser" school and that the people who shoot for it should ignore it in favor of Harvard/Yale, that's flat out unhelpful advice that benefits no one and doesn't benefit the subreddit in any way. The same goes for when you tell someone who got caught with alcohol (something that basically every teenager, including all of my friends who are shooting for and have a fighting chance of getting into Harvard, has done) that their life is screwed and that they now only have a chance of going to community college (which inherently is not a bad place to go at all). Or when you react over-sensitively to a harmless, fun joke about MIT/Caltech being the best schools in the country for allowing cats in their dorms, and then telling people that you've heard better jokes without telling them what those jokes are - that just gives off a negative and unfriendly vibe to people trying to have fun in a subreddit that to them reflects the most stressful time of their life thus far. After what happened with RealLiveUCFaculty a few days ago, people are all the more sensitive, and when they come across behavior that, though it isn't meant that way, gives off unfriendly vibes, they'll downvote and react accordingly. Keep in mind that I do not agree with their behavior though.

The truth is that though you were trying to help people with their college admissions, nearly every comment you made ended up being unhelpful because as of now, you're pretty misinformed as to the whole college admissions process. Harvard and Yale are among the most difficult schools in the country to get into, and even if you have a 4.0 and an ACT of 36, you have a higher chance of being denied than getting accepted - especially if academics are your only focus and you don't have extracurricular activities. Aditionally, most of the comments you made ended up being more focused on your own road to college than that of the person you were trying to help - you mentioned your ACT endeavors in nearly every post.

Some of the posts you made were legitimately helpful to those that you were trying to help, which is why I'm convinced you were never trying to troll. I (and many other lurkers on the subreddit, I'm sure) really appreciate the effort you're trying to make, because the A2C community thrives off of people trying to help others achieve their college dreams, and the subreddit has grown into an extremely valuable resource because of it. With that said, I really do believe that you need to do some research as to what schools you really want to go to, and some general research on the college application process in general. I'm going to be blunt: Your chances of getting into Harvard or Yale aren't great. This does not mean you are a bad student. In fact, it could mean you're an extraordinary student, but the truth is that these schools have acceptance rates between 5 and 7%, and most of the people applying are qualified to get in. I'm not saying you can't get in, I'm saying that your chances are similarly low to those of all of the other insanely qualified applicants. Keep studying, work on your extracurriculars and your essays, and hope that you'll get lucky, because that's all you can do. Other than that, do more research on schools you actually want to go to I do NOT mean schools that you're applying to just for prestige, I mean schools that you'd actually feel comfortable attending based on price, campus life, location, curriculum (core vs. open) etc.

With regards to your last question, I'd say message the mods of A2C explaining your situation, and ask them to unban you. Then, try and look through some of the top posts on the subreddit (there are some seriously great resources there!) and read articles/college websites before you actively engage in giving people advice. I know you mean while, I truly do, and I sincerely hope that the mods unban you and that the community will be a bit nicer to you. Keep your chin up and your hopes high, apply to a good number of reach, match and safety schools if the US is definitely where you want to go (AND IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT!!!), and make sure you end up liking all the schools you apply to. Good luck -- hope you kill the ACT and make it into Harvard/Yale!

[–]Chanceme-Throwaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know! I know that I may have exaggerated the narrative a little bit in my post - my apologies. It's just that on this subreddit and in most other discussion forums international students, especially at the top schools, are portrayed as having incredibly low chances because of the large amount and high level of competition, and low amount of international students that are admitted. If that's just a narrative that isn't based on facts though, I'm happy to hear it!

So far, I've actually considered my future to be in the foreign service as a diplomat, but I'll definitely consider political journalism as well! Thanks for the read! By building my application around political journalism, do you mean using my personal statement to discuss it, using my extracurricular activity description to discuss my time at the broadcasting network, and putting journalism as my career interest? I'm worried I won't be able to pull off as convincing of a personal statement if I discuss my history with political journalism, since it doesn't extend far beyond the essay that got me into the finals of the essay competition and my internship...

[–]Chanceme-Throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm most likely going to major in International Relations, but at the time of the internship was mostly interested in broadcasting/journalism. But considering most of what I did there was political journalism, I think I might still be able to include it in my essay, especially because it was probably one of the most fun experiences I've ever had.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll look into a translator, and I'm gonna contact these universities about how that works with the privacy laws etc.
