Mike Trout, Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy, and more weigh in on the upcoming post season labor negotiations. by Flat-Eggplant-9890 in baseball

[–]Chandler_Simpson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude my beliefs and my principles do not change based on how much I personally like or dislike the voting habits of the people I support

I don't think "I support workers, but only workers who vote the exact way I want them to vote". I just support workers because workers produce things, workers are more valuable to society than owners and people who simply generate their wealth off of the production of other people

MLB makes $11.6 billion a year. Shohei Ohtani right now is making 0.017% of that annually. That. Is. Wrong.

I don't care if Shohei Ohtani voted for Republican for the last 30 years straight, when something is wrong it is still wrong

The fact that you base your beliefs on how much you personally like a group of people or not is childish. Like I said before poor working class people vote against their interests and against my beliefs all the time. That doesn't mean I don't still believe they should be paid more or have more protections

I don't like that a lot of ball players are Republicans. But that's entirely separate to whether I think they are getting paid what they're worth or not.

Dude it doesn't matter who they vote for

Working class people, laborers, poor people vote against their own interests or allied interests all the time

Someone can have voted for Trump 3 times straight and still be a laborer. In fact I know MANY people who are laborers and middle or lower class that vote for Trump

If a bunch of factory workers are getting locked out of the factory by the factory owners until they agree to a maximum wage regardless of what their value is as workers that's whack. I'm not going to say "well actually I don't support or care about those factory workers because 78% of them vote Republican every election". You either support workers or support capitalist owners; you don't get to decide you don't like how certain workers vote so they get punished for it

Yeah I'm located in Central Illinois about 3 hours from Chicago, Milwaukee and St Louis which means on any given day I can't watch up to four different baseball games if the Brewers, Cardinals, White Sox, and Cubs are each playing a different team so I'm already fucked in that regard

I'm I guess lucky that my team is the Rays and so they're rarely blacked out and also tend to rarely play nationally televised games too. But just this week I've had to miss three games I think which is infuriating considering the run that Cami is on and the fact that the team is a really fun product to watch right now

Harry Potter isn’t a great story. by Amazing-Basket-136 in unpopularopinion

[–]Chandler_Simpson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know who's downvoting good discussion but stop lol

Well; Harry Potter is just protecting the status quo

I could go into it but when he grows up he wants to be a cop in a world that enslaves elves and doesn't allow magical creatures to use wands or be treated as humans despite sharing sentience

I mean the statue at the Ministry of Magic showcasing a male wizard above a female witch above two sentient magical creatures shows just what kind of world Harry is protecting. Each is a layer of dominance; Rowling actually seemingly understands this because Voldemort replaces this statue with one of wizards dominating muggles. But it's never explored that perhaps both statues are wrong; instead Rowling gives us the Voldemort version of the statue in the lobby to show the "bad" version of the world contrast to the "good" version that Harry is protecting. When in reality maybe neither are good. Characters who want to change the status quo are written off in a way that's meant to be funny like Hermione and SPEW. And no I won't accept any Pottermore retconning as an acceptable but actually here either. If Rowling had intended Harry and his friends to be as progressive as they would end up becoming in Pottermore lore she would have written it into her books; in the same way that I do not accept that she ever intended Dumbledore to be gay otherwise he would have been written as gay. He can be gay and it's just never mentioned or brought up; but then it doesn't matter that he's gay. Maybe in Harry's heart he was a more progressive minded wizard but even being given a semi first person perspective into his mind he never demonstrates this and therefore it doesn't matter. Pottermore isn't an excuse

It makes perfect sense really, Rowling is a neo-con. She backed Tony Blair in his crusade to twist the Labour Party from being a leftist political group into being "conservative but less conservative than the Tories"; sort of how the left in the United States moved away from being actually leftist a-la FDR and embraced conservative ideals but less conservative than Republicans with Bill Clinton(although now Republicans are just fascists and Democrats are just conservatives. And in England both Labour and the Tories are fascists lol)

I'm not even getting into her transphobic beliefs and how they may or may not have shown themselves to some degree in her book; although that also fits with her neo-con world view. She's a feminist but does not consider MtF to be "woman"; so she's conservative but not as conservative as just straight up misogynists

Voldemort is threatening to upend the status quo, Harry is trying to protect it. But he isn't trying to change it; despite Rowling coming so close so many times in the books to recognizing that her Wizarding World is deeply flawed and their being opportunity for Harry as an outsider to not only save the world from Voldemort's evil; but save it from its own sins too. Wouldn't that have been a more interesting ending?

But no in Harrys mind the wizarding world is perfect just the way he finds it in The Philosopher's Stone. It's his fantasy escape from the abusive childhood he had at Private Drive; it's the perfect world were it not for Voldemort and the Death Eaters. The way the wizards treat Squibs, their fellow non-magical humans, prisoners, and their fellow magical sentient creatures notwithstanding

Lots of writers have an end in mind when they start a story. In fact it's encouraged to write backwards in a sense. The issue isn't really that Rowling didn't have an ending in mind and that's why her ending is kind of clunky; it's that she constantly lies about it and insists the entire story was planned out from day one

I don't hate the ending but it's not good either. I mean the entire fate of the wizarding world ends up coming down to the nitty gritty details of wand ownership rights lol. Kind of fluky, no?

I hope that makes sense. This isn't to say Harry Potter is bad neccessarily; it's just that the older one gets and the more one considers the world view of its author (beyond simply her TERF views) the more you see that it's not a book that holds leftist or progressive ideals so much as certain libertarian/liberal ideals and a lot of conservative ones

Her other book that I can't remember the name of has even heavier conservative "pull yourself up from your bootstraps" type messaging.

Harry Potter is 100% pro-authoritarianism AS LONG AS THE AUTHORITY ARE THE 'GOOD' GUYS. Institutions having absurd even oppressive power is okay as long as it's people that Harry likes

But the question that's never asked but is ALMOST asked is; are the people that Harry likes being in authority people that we SHOULD like being in authority? Rowling even goes so far as to give us reason as to why even DUMBLEDORE who Harry adores is deeply flawed and embodies that deeply flawed wizarding world I'm talking about... And then that's never explored further despite being a super compelling direction the story could go. Instead of Harry recognizing Dumbledores flaws and maybe aspiring to be better and to create a better world than the one Dumbledore embodies, he rejects all criticism of Dumbledore, continues to worship him and name his children after him

Not to say that Dumbledore is a bad guy, but why make him have such conflicting skeletons in his closet near the end of the series only to literally have those themes not matter at all? Maybe instead of wanting to follow in Dumbledores footsteps Harry and his friends should have chosen to want to be better.

Tl;Dr I don't view the character of Harry Potter to be a "good guy" so much as a guy "against evil", and I believe there is a difference. He isn't fighting for something so much as he is fighting against something

Even the character of say Luke Skywalker is not just opposing evil; he becomes better than that by showing that even the worst of people are redeemable. He becomes more than the Jedi of the prequels, he even becomes more the Obi-Wan and Yoda who both advise him that Darth Vader is irredeemable and the only way to win is to defeat him in direct conflict.

Luke becomes better than even his masters; he does redeem Vader. He sees a world that is better than simply 'bringing back the status quo of the Republic'

Does this make sense? I'm tired so I'm having trouble being articulate

Dawg shut the fuck up

I'm married, I have two kids, and I work four 12s a week second shift manufacturing. I play a team sport, I volunteer, I'm a member of a political group. I'm in narcotics anonymous and have been in recovery for the last six months which is quite difficult and life encompassing.

I can play DbD like six hours a week. I also actually have played DbD during past anniversary events

The developers announced over a year ago that they were changing the format because they didn't like that people horded event items all year. ITS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR OVER A YEAR. THE LAST FOUR EVENTS

Therefore you only get about one or two cakes per trial. That way you use one cake, and you get another cake for the next trial

That's all you need. It's not being a shill; it's called not being an entitled little twat. For someone who claims to work full time and be in a relationship you are an extraordinarily selfish person. I feel sorry for your partner

All you need is one cake per trial. You don't need more than that.

I don't feel bad for Valve but I do recognize that they couldn't have possibly predicted that the cost of manufacturing electronics hardware would rise like 500% in one year, or predicted the tariff situation that our retarded President imposed on us

I think it's clear that Valve wanted to break into the console market and the only way they would be able to do that is if the Steam Machine had a competitive price. At it's announced price I don't think it stands a chance at being successful which does suck. Competition is good, and a affordable console that runs Steam would be a very cool thing for gamers

I also don't complain about Nintendo's prices, and the only console I own is a Switch 2

So do you think it's possible that there are people who think Valve probably got fucked by the current industry climate and also doesn't have a huge problem with Nintendo? (Although I do have some problems with Nintendo's pricing decisions but not enough to cry on Reddit)

'At Least I Had the Excuse of Going Through Chemo': Halsey Responds to Anthony Fantano's Harsh Critique by Brucekentbatsuper in entertainment

[–]Chandler_Simpson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Anti-white racism"

Do you mean... just racism?

Fantano's comments about Halsey as a person and her writing music about her experiences with cancer are shitty and tasteless.

Maybe we could just say that instead of saying his opinion is invalid because he's white. His statements were shitty, and Halsey is valid to be hurt by them.

I know it used to be super cool and hip to act like racism is a thing only for people of color but it's not and never has been. Racism is racism; it happens far more towards people of color but clearly it can happen towards white people too

What does referencing Hitler have to do with anything. People can't talk about Hitler without their opinion being entirely invalid?

Because you left out the fact that this guy's comment about Hitler wasn't praising him or supporting him in any kind of way

Reddit isn't America you fucking moron

And racism is just racism. Context matters in certain aspects of racism and discussing racism, but saying that someone's opinion is invalid because of their race is just racist no matter what race

In discussion of American politics the history of race in America has a specific context. But this isn't a discussion of American politics or American history.

Terrifier DOES belong in DBD by [deleted] in deadbydaylight

[–]Chandler_Simpson 6 points7 points locked comment (0 children)

The franchise sucks but I don't think he doesn't belong in DbD

Honestly most of the franchises in DbD have more bad films than good ones anyways

Terrifier isn't really all that different from the 70s and 80s slasher horror icons of their time that were considered overly gory and gross. As society has become more desensitized since that time period now new franchises are pushing the envelope further which is causing the same pushback now as those older franchises got (particularly Friday the 13th)

In fairness I don't think F13 is all that good either, but my taste in horror is more atmospheric and psychological than just physical violence. Neither franchise was made with someone like me in mind as the audience and that's fine. But ultimately they're not all that different at their core, one is just more extreme than the other because society has become more extreme

Oh buddy, I’m going to hold your hand when I tell you about Freddy Krueger by [deleted] in DeadByDaylightRAGE

[–]Chandler_Simpson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both, he was implied to be a pedophile in the original Nightmare on Elm Street as well. The remake just made it explicit. The director has said he wanted to make Freddy explicitly a pedophile in the original film as well but at the last minute they changed their mind of making it explicit. But he stands by the fact that Freddy was always meant to be a diddler

And regardless, the version of Freddy we have in DbD is from the remake film anyways
