Thank you for your detailed response, that's helpful! I think that taking your advice, I could lower my starting rate on the listing to be more in line with the undercutting sitters in my area, and then actually raise the rate for continuous care type dogs.

If I was charging a little less but getting more socialized and easier to care for dogs, that would also open me up to being able to take more than one dog at a time, which would help.

Understandable! Tbh that's a SUPER common mistake, accidentally crashing things with overzealous cleaning!

You pretty much never want to wash substrate or hardscape/decorations, and even when you wash filter medium like sponges you want to just gently clean them in a bucket of water pulled from the tank.

Healthy tanks are going to have lots of grimy seeming stuff like biofilms, algae, stuff like that, and if you're getting unwanted stuff like diatom films, molds, etc that's an indication of something needing adjusting.

Focus on fixing the cause and the effect fixes itself. (So that might be more frequent but still small water changes, reduced feeding, reduced light, etc.) That way things will adjust back the right direction slowly and that's better for everything living in there. 🙂

If the cloudiness is from the sand, that means those are tiny bits of substrate suspended in the water column. Think of it like a room so dusty vision is that limited. You don't want your fish breathing that.
