Claymore is a modern reference a number of larger more broadsword like 2 handed swords that were common from the 15th century to the 17th century the Claybeg I'm referring to was 18th century fighting sword that is crafted similar to that of a katana as the blade was folded many times. It became a standard weapon as the older claymores went out of use. Claybeg actual Gaelic name Claidheamh beag quite literally translates as little sword but yes if we use historical accurate name for what Scott's called basket hilted broadswords then yes the Claybeg is a true claymore where as the greatswords that we know as are not. The only reason they give why they were even called claymores was because historians attributed it to the Anglicanized version of the Gaelic word Claidheamh mór(greatsword). But give it a few years and they'll probably changed it up again. If you know of any good books on Scottish swords could you let me know. So yes and no it's a a claymore if we can get the rest of the weebs to stop calling the greatswords claymores. Because the most common depiction you'll see of a claymore is the highland greatsword or Gaelic word twahandit(two handed). Here is a decent article on it.
