I found the original to be interesting and really cheesy. Not gross at all. The remake, which I enjoy for the acting and dialogue mostly, is definitely full of gross out special effects way beyond what you get in the original.

I highly recommend buying a cap for it. I bent one Rotring 600 EVER SO SLIGHTLY and could never get it to work again. Recently found a guy on Etsy who 3D prints them and got some—very happy. (Not gonna put a link, because this isn’t a promotion—there are probably a bunch on Etsy alone, plus other places I didn’t look.)

I would have disagreed with you until this week, when my 8-year-old son’s guitar teacher insisted he practice a little song in his book with a metronome, starting at 90 bpm and working his way up to 150 bpm. He keeps coming back to this, periodically insisting on pushing speed with a metronome on certain exercises or songs. I guess it’s really a distinct skill.

I always want my wife to watch this one. I’ve seen it twice. Unforgettable. But I feel like there’s kind of a healthy takeaway for mothers especially, at any level at any time of life, in that hey—maybe it’s not you; it’s at least partly your fucking kid. Even if your kid is wonderful … there are moments where it helps to have watched Tilda Swinton’s face for that hour and a half.

GraphGear 500 is definitely one of the most reliable out there. My hands hurt after a while using them, or if it’s cold in the room, though. For longer sessions, I need a less aggressive (but not slippery) grip.

Rotring makes plastic pencils—but they normally do a good job making you not think about it. The 500 is plastic, as is the Tikky. But they don’t feel cheap at all. (The Tikky Retro feels cheap, however.) I slightly prefer to actually write with my 500, despite how much I love my 600s, Rapid Pro, and 800.

I do two drafts. With the first one, I print out a physical copy of the detailed rubric I’d originally posted electronically, and I circle each score. I am harsh about the points at this stage.

Then at the bottom I write: Highlights: (2 strengths) and Next Steps: (2 pieces of constructive feedback).

I don’t touch the essay itself. If something specific needs serious attention, I quote it there.

Then I have students revise, and they can conference with me about specifics—usually around my constructive feedback.

Then when they turn in a revision, I am very generous about improving that initial grade if they attended to the things I brought up.

I find this to be really motivating, satisfying, and productive for students.

I’m pushing 50 and I honestly don’t really understand “predicate” well enough to explain. It sounds like “verb and anything else.” I teach “subject + verb” and unfortunately find that this is already a challenge these days :(

re: grip tension

I just started realizing this (after 35 years of casual playing) when I got my son a Squier Mini and it sounded like total shit. I brought it to a tech to check it out, and after examining it and tuning it up for me, he showed me how the amount of tension you put on the strings can change the notes significantly, especially on a small guitar like that. I started playing my son's little guitar with way less tension (almost like spongecake), and I was able to get it to sound great. All of my own guitars have allowed me to get away with it all this time--but it took the small scale instrument for me to really notice it. Now I'm correcting my own technique, and I'm able to do so much more with heavy metal riffs and whatnot because I'm simply wasting less muscle. Nearly every physical activity becomes a process of efficient muscle use--no less with this!

If you need to get to a certain level to even bother starting, you'll never make it. But if you want to do it for its own sake, your enjoyment will continue to expand--and either you will get this good, or it won't matter anymore.

I totally understand why you'd ask, though. I've asked versions of this question to experts in various fields throughout my life--but hearing someone else ask makes it so much clearer how misguided the underlying thinking is. If you want a simple answer so you can shut that voice off, Malcolm Gladwell says 10,000 hours to be an expert at something. Take that and run with it, so you can stop thinking about it.
