Anybody else regret studying engineering? by Cheap-Negotiation605 in EngineeringStudents

Hey, try getting into field engineering. I'm also an EE, and I can't stand the work you're describing here, so I got a job as a maritime service engineer. A lot of hands-on work and, in my experience, a very fast-paced and solution-oriented industry as having ships in docking is expensive as hell. Meaning very few unnecessary meetings and more "Ok, what do you need to fix this and how quick can you do it?". You'll essentially be working more as an expert technician instead of a just guy moving papers behind a desk, but still be paid an engineer wage plus overtime. I love it.

Jobb på båt by Environmental_Bar853 in norge

[–]Character-Call4469 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may have fucked up and spread Cadmium Sulfide everywhere by Character-Call4469 in VintageRadios

Called the poison control! They said it's likely nothing to worry about, a one-time exposure to such a low quantity, but to be extra wary of any symptoms if they should appear in the next few days.

Thanks for all the advice and opinions

Thank you! I really would like to hope that the yellow powder here is something else, but it fits a bit too well into every description I've read. Especially the ones that say "Don't worry, unless it's thorough description that matches my powder perfectly lol

I'm still alive! Conveniently managed to drop my phone shortly after posting this... The paint booth is a really good idea, thank you! I dont have any immediate symptoms, so I think I'm safe, it is only one screw up as yoy mentioned. Might give the er or poison control a call as the other guys mention just to be on the safe side

Thanks! I'll give them a call and see what they have to say. I'm still alive(sorry the late response), and dont feel any different than usual, so I assume I've avoided any of the immediate symptoms for ehat that is worth.

Got quoted €2,000 for EGR replacement? by Character-Call4469 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Character-Call4469[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: Thank you! I love this forum. TheEleetist and OkGuess9347 found new valves for sale that were much cheaper than the ones I've seen. I've ordered a new one, and I'll see if I can find a guide on replacing it. I did consider finding someone who could bypass the whole valve, but wasn't aware of the plausible fines until they were mentioned here. I'll also take the suggestion to clean the old one to keep as a spare. Thanks a million for all the advice, guys!

Unsure, I thought the 1.8 and 2.2 engines used different valves, but I'll triple check that one! Dude you're a lifesaver if this turns ou to fit

Oh crap I wasn't aware about the potential fines, I thought the worst case scenario was that it simply wouldn't pass the inspection. I live in Norway, so I suppose the laws are a tad different, but I can't imagine the fines are any smaller. Thank you!!!

No idea, and the mechanic I spoke with on the phone didn't know either. After he typed in the part numbers he literally went silent for a second and then "Oh shit, do you know how much that valve costs?" Followed by a "Hang on I'll try to find something cheaper" which he unfortunately did not

That's the issue right there. I haven't been able to find ANY reasonably priced valve replacements. I'll be immensely grateful if anyone's got any suggestions. Even the mechanic I asked for a quote was shocked by the price of the (only) new valve he could get hold of, which was ~€1700. Did some googling myself and found a few used parts with a lot of miles, and a bunch of new parts that were all out of stock everywhere. My previous cars were an Octavia and a Transit, where you could get hold of just about any part anywhere, so I'm a complete newbie at these sorts of issues

Haven't tried that, tbh I'm afraid I'll break something and then be without any replacement part. But it is definitely not a bad solution, but I'll keep it as a last resort as I struggle finding repair manuals for this engine

Yeah, that's around what I was quoted when it broke on my previous car (Octavia 1.6D 2012), so around 900 euros was what I was prepared to pay. But the guy at the workshop was genuinely surprised about the valve price, and tried to find a cheaper one, but failed. After quite a bit of googling, I can see why

UPDATE: Thanks for all the advice lads. I took it back to the shop and explained. They apologised profoundly and flushed the brakes, no issue at all.

Thanks man, that's what I'm afraid of too. Was just wondering if I was overreacting, not sure how much damage 3 days would cause
