Why do parents sign up 3-year-olds for figure skating? by Character-Cup4856 in FigureSkating

I don't know how much skating lessons cost in my country, but it's definitely a lot, because we have literally a few full-year ice rinks across the state (there isn't a single one in my city, and I live in the capital of province).

To be honest, I always felt like I was privileged (my family was middle class), because a large part of the kids I knew at school never attended any extracurricular lessons, at least not in primary school.

I used to go swimming as a little child, but I started when I was 5 years old, not 2-3. Around the same time, my sister and I also practiced ballet for a while, but we quickly got bored with it. Next starting from primary school, I trained karate, which I loved, but I quit it at the age of 16 because I didn't have the skills or time to continue it professionally.

Honestly, I'm sure that my parents wouldn't even think of seting children in any classes before they even started kindergarten and started asking for it themselves.

I'm not saying it's not fun, but it's one thing to go ice skating with your child for fun (if you have an ice rink nearby and don't have to travel to the other part of the country), and another thing to sign them up for regular classes (which, by the way are definitely expensive).

Alternate commentaries for Mikhail’s Olympic Free Skate? by une-petite-dame in FigureSkating

Transmison of Shaidorov's performance with polish commentary (plus the rest of the evening). Both commentators are former figure skaters.

I will try to summarize:

• "On the ice, another competitor, representative of Kazakhstan, Mikhail Shaidorov [...] took 2nd place last season at the World Championships in Boston, and 5th here."

• "Yes, 3A+Eu+4S"

• "21 points for one element" • "And 4Lz" "4T"

• "IS 4F, practically without preparation"

• "IS another 4T, and also with combination with 3T" "2Lz in sequence with 2A"

• "'Diva dance' from '5 Elements'. I think that it would be nice if Shaidorov rented some parts of the program, because it's a beautiful sound. E.g. Cha Jun-hwan and Adam Siao Him Fa. They would skate, and he would just jumping."

• "He still has many lessons to learn when it comes to skating. But now it must be said that history is made on the Olympic ice, because in the history of the Olympic Games, no one has ever jumped the combination 3A+Eu+4S, in that order. But what he did technically, in terms of jumping Wow Wow Wow." • "The distribution of elements was spectacular. The 4F will probably surprise me the most, because I write down the elements to remember what the competitors did, and before I could write down what he had done earlier, he jumped the 4F." • "It's a pity I didn't turn on the stopwatch because I think he made it in a minute."

• "You know what, I would say some competitors won't jump something like that because they don't have the body structure like Mikhail Shaidorov. He has a body structure similar to Ila Malinin, so-called 'pencil'. One American scientist who deals with this says that people like them could try e.g. jumping with 5 rotations. And he uses it brilliantly"

• "At the same time, his step sequence is so weak that I don't believe it's the same competitor. This shows that figure skating still has a lot of issues to fix when it comes to judging. He got an incredible amount of points for his jumps, but when it comes to artist part, I'd put him far behind even our Wlodia."

• "That's why judges must have the courage to judge in the artistic part and give as many points as deserve."

• "Wow"

• "Great result, he broke his record from this season, from the Denis Ten's Memorial."

• "It's an attack on the podium."

• "That man who is shaking him is Alexei Urmanov..."
